What is the best psu for about £70? ( I mean models not brands)
I was going with the 480w tagan one but reading some threads has got me wondering.

I have a Jeantec 500W myself and i'd recommend that personally but for that cash the Tagan seems a good choice as many people seem to use it and have had no issues with it, but there's always a first time!

I'm building an new A64 system based around the Asus AN8-SLI, and have chosen the Antec NeoPower 480W. I don't pretend to understand the technical reasons why it is good, other than that fact that it's Antec, and countless reviews say it does exactly what it says on the tin.

Okay, fair, it's £88 not £70, but as far as I'm concerned, a PSU is one place where you should not skimp.

The Tagan is a fair choice - loved by some, hated by others.

If you don't need ATX2, any of the high output Antec TruPowers are also good between £55-£75.

I have the 520w and its great voltages never change even on full load. Voltages have been tweaked and are within 0.02 all the time

Well the Tagan is supposed to be as good and its 480w and i do like the sound of tagan.

Ive haerd the tagan supposed to be good although ive read a few people having problems with them blowing up. Main reason id go for the ocz is adjustable rails so if one of the voltages lines is a bit low you can increase it and their support is first class. I actually blew the first power supply up through my own error and they just replaced it anyway even when i told them what id done. They have there own forum where you can ask questions and get support.

Btw 480w means nothing, most components take power from the 12v line and the 420w ocz psu has 60w more on that line.

Power supplies give 3 types of power 12volts,5volts and 3.3 volts. They can only supply so much of each type. When buying one look at how many amps each one can supply on each rail (e.g 12v volt rail, 5 volt rail etc).
Most modern stuff draws the majority of its power at 12v.
You can buy a 600watt power supply with only 18amps on the 12v and its usless, all that extra wattage is split between the 3.3 and the 5v lines and doesn't get used.
The power supply i menmtioned although only 420w gives 33amps at 12v which makes it very good. The tagan gives 28amps which is also very good. Whatever you choose thats what to look out for.
Power supplies don't always provide exactly 12.5 and 3.3 volts. It varies. A good power supply sticks very close to tyhese e.g 12volts varies between 11.90 and 12.1.
Some vary more than others. I like the ocz psu because it has little dials on the back, if a particulry rail (say the 12v rail) is only supplying 11.8 you just turn the little screw until you get it as close to 12 as possible.

Mind you the OCZ is made by Topower, the same people who make Tagan...

Thats true, people have posted that on the ocz forums, ocz say there's are made by topower to ocz's spec so their different. Don't know if it's true.
