    Cheapo Lappy

I need a lappy for my eldest to do school work on, Im on a tight budget with this so it needs to be 2nd hand. A local PC shop has one with built in dvd, floppy and psu for £200, cant remember what model it is

Any advice welcome on whats hot and what to avoid. Its only going to need to run word, exel etc and a bit of web surfing and msn. Also usb be useful for printer and to save work to a stick

Try and get something based on the Pentium 3-M. Very nice proccessors, and should give you a fairly good battery life, assuming the battery isn't shot. I don't know if HP / Compaq were hardware tagging their components back then, but it might be best to avoid them as hardware upgrades will have to be sourced through them, and hence cost 10x what you could get them for on eBay.

If you can get a Thinkpad for that money, go for it, they are built like tanks. Also you should be able to pick up a Dell Latitutde C series for the same price, and they are also good machines.

I know the auction has ended, but something like that would probably be ideal.
