Best video editing system?

If money weren't a major consideration, (but lets not go too OTT), what would be your ideal set to handle a decent whack of video editing?

I'm talking specifically about shooting footage on a high end digital video camera, then editing the audio and video to give a finished professional result on DVD at as high quality as poss.

I reckon a fairly meaty processor, a decent wedge of memory and a large slice of HDD, dressed with a drizzle of powerful GFX card..

Am I right?

So, what're your thoughts?

Oh and as a dessert, how about a nice 19" TFT to finish?

Firstly i love my Canon XM1 but i'd want either a Panasonic AG DVX100 (for the nice 24frames per second look) or a new Sony HDR FX-1 would be nice (would love HDTV resolution video) and all the steadicams, dollies etc.. i could get my hands on. hehe :)

As for PC spec all the things you said can never be bad, but with a nice Matrox RTX100 card (or RTX10 to be cheaper) or a Canopus card for importing and realtime editing so i don't have to sit around and wait for things to render :rant: (one day, one will be mine) and i'd personally go for 2, maybe 3 monitors to spread my work across when editing. As for editing programs, currently use premiere pro, but after moving from 6.5 not liking it's style too much, wouldn't take too much to make me look elsewhere. would love to have a play around with Avid.

Processor wise, you want dual Xeons I reckon. You won't hear me say that often;).

I agree! ;)

Not sure I agree there. Xeon MPs top out at 2.8GHz and have to share a single 266MHz memory bus. The increase in processor power is not worth the huge loss of bandwidth and the huge increase in price. Dual Xeons can be had for surprisingly reasonable money now, the same can't be said for Quads.....
