I'd go with the best gfx card you can find for the money, you're going to get more out of that than anything else.

On ebay you might get something as good as a 9800 pro for 50 quid.

Well, you could get a 9550 and soft mod it to 9700 speeds. But yeah, you would probably be best checking ebay on a second hand deal.

9500 you mean- the 9550 has no softmodability.

9550 is a cut down (lower clocks for core and mem) 9600. So only ever going to have 4 pipes and a 128-bit memory bus.

IIRC A 9500 may have a 128 bit bus but always has 8 pipes and may be unlocked to a full 256 bit memory bus (like the 9700 and 9800s) if it has it's memory arranged in an L shape (chips to the side and above the core)

Don't forget a GF 4200 is likely to sell for £25+ so that's £75 you've got to play with.

could you not get r9700's for £47 from retek - re: davehams theard in ".bargins" that would be lovely. then sell the RAM see what money you have and get some more RAM.

EDIT: http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=35623 - but no longer it appears. keep an eye, this or a r9500 would be the best card you could get.

I'd send the money to me, just leave an acceptance thread and i'll give you my details, or you could send me any un-wanted kit or money, i'll be happy to take them off your hands

My CS: Sourse runs fine on my system with a geforce 4, (got my 6800 waiting to go in this weekend ), I'd say go with the ramm, it will speed up not just your gaming but your whole computer, when i put 2 gigs in mine i couldn't belive how fast games and apps run, whenever i play cs I'm always the first in a game when a new map is loaded and I never have the lowest fastest connection, a gfx will help your gaming, but ram would speed up your whole pc ...

if you get a gfx card make sure its not an over memoried, under-speed type...you know the type; where 2 versions are sold 128 and 256 or a 64 and 128 where the least memory is actually faster due to its intrinsic speed, rather than the cards with 'more' memory as they have slightly slower memory...
