Hi Peter! I might try and hang around a little this time...

I've overclocked the i5 750 to 3.6 GHz which has helped a bit. I've also ordered an RX 480 4GB as there was an offer I couldn't refuse. Will see how it works... if it doesn't then I'll have to buy myself a new CPU and motherboard... it's a hard life.

    I'll report back!

What PSU do you have and how old is it??

If it is 7 years old,I really would not want to be taxing it with an overclock and a more power hungry card TBH!!

It's an Antec Basiq power 550 plus - the overclock is the same cpu voltage and as far as I can tell the RX 480 will actually use less power... but I may replace the guts of the system soon which will include a new CPU/mobo/RAM/PSU

The HD5770 will consume much less power than an RX480. The PSU was an OKish design at the time but looking at this thread,I am not sure I would be wanting to use it to power a dual six pin graphics card after 7 years:

Its one of the lower end Antec PSUs and other companies which used the same design also tended to use lower grade capacitors. I am not saying the setup won't run fine, but again I would probably have got a new PSU,as it can always be re-used in a newer system!

Ok possibly I will buy a PSU then... any recommendations from Scan (or elsewhere)? I guess I need a 500W unit approximately.

Not modular but looks solidly made.

    Edit!!

There is also this refurbished PSU(its a tad large BTW):

Although I am not sure whether it is NOS,surplus warranty replacement units or a repaired PSU.

Thanks! Have ordered along with some extra RAM. Should be able to get the current setup to ~4GHz and see if I'm happy with the results. If not then I can get a Kaby lake pentium dual core down the line...

Re: What should I upgrade (and what to?)

So I've installed a new PSU, 2gb of ram and the rx 480 - had a mix of a nightmare when it wouldn't boot, I thought I'd have to reinstall windows to get the right drivers etc but it turned out two of the pins on the 6+2 pci-e power cable were loose... Pleased I noticed that quickly! Noticeable difference in framerates and let's m upgrade the cpu and motherboard at my leisure. Thanks for the advice, all!
