I'd be silly not to take this upgrade right?
Hi guys,
How bizarre that a 12 year old thread revival brings me back here on the very day I actually have an upgrade conundrum.
Have just been offered an i7 2700k with a asus p8z77-V LX mobo, 8gb of ram, and an AMD 6970 (may be wrong on model there) for £150.
I'm currently running an i3 2120 on a asus p8z68-v LX mobo, 24gb or ram, and a 7870.
Given that with the parts left over I could probably sell them to a friend to upgrade his dying pc and recoup £50+ (not sure if I'd keep the 2nd gpu as a back up or not) and if not I could always look into turning the spares into a NAS to get my HDDs out of my rig.
So, £100-150 to go from an i3 2120 to an i7 2700k. Worth it still in 2017?
Cheers guys.
:Edit:
P.s. If I did, I've not had chance to compare them too closely yet, any recommendations on which Mobo would be best off keeping? I don't think either have true PWM fan control IIRC.
Re: I'd be silly not to take this upgrade right?
Looking at your current system specs and the secondhand cost of a Core i7 2700K I would say its worth it as you get a better motherboard too. I would probably get a new PSU though as the HX520W is pretty old now.
Edit!
Having said that Ryzen 4C/8T CPUs in the next few months might be worth the wait, but the CPU alone will cost more than the upgrade.

Yep. Do it. :D
Re: I'd be silly not to take this upgrade right?
Cheers for the opinions, and sorry Cat, I was posting before rushing off to work. Didn't realise that my system details were so out of date. I've already replaced the HX520 with a RM650X so no worries there.
I wasn't really feeling the 'need' to do a more substantial upgrade but I had been getting the itch, I suppose stepping up to the 2700k could push that back a while until Ryzen has settled in and Intel have had chance to retaliate. It was more that I just wasn't sure if £150 for a 2011/12 cpu was a good idea. Although from what I've just been looking at for benchmarks between the 2600k/2700k and newer stuff like the 6700k, there really isn't a huge amount in it. Intel really have been dragging their heels haven't they. Ryzen was long overdue. Also it gives me options to overclock and stepping up to 4 cores would definitely be worth it for the like of video editing etc..
Cheers guys I think I'll jump on it.

Oh, Is the CM Hyper 212X still one of the best budget coolers to go with or has something stole it's crown for around that kind of price?
Re: I'd be silly not to take this upgrade right?
I think that's the best you can do at that price range.
Re: I'd be silly not to take this upgrade right?
Seems pretty reasonable for £150
I'd be tempted to keep the both boards though, if you've only got one and it dies then you'll be hard pressed to replace it. The higher end 1155 boards are in somewhat short supply compared to the amount of processors about.
Edit:
Having looked at the sold prices on eBay, your Z68 motherboard alone might sell for roughly the cost of some of the B350 AM4 boards!
Though if you went Ryzen you'd need DDR4 ram which is expensive :/ (Especially if you wanted to match the 24GB of your old system)
Re: I'd be silly not to take this upgrade right?
Seems a very good upgrade for the money.
