Nov 2016 - My first Skylake Build

    Hi all,

I've been very happy with my X99 system and soon, I'll be replacing all the Crucial RAM with Corsair Dominator Plats and I've been planning to add a Linux 'hack' box for quite sometime.

Sure, this build is totally OTT For a 'linux' box, but it will also dual-purpose as a 4K ready, gaming system; should the need arise.

Ordered all the bits I need from B&H USA simply because they offer the cheapest DHL shipping rates.

    Here's the 6700K

and some larger bits that arrived:

    Some videos too:

    Part selection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGtD4hLskMU
    Parts unboxing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm6IZIfGqZk

Waiting on the new Corsair case to arrive.

LOL, it won't have a discrete GPU for a while though Aye, it's rather over the top, but I hope it'll be future proofed to run for at least 5-6 years.

Trying to work out the circumstances under which you'd suddenly need a 4k ready gaming rig...

That's one hell of a contingency...

Re: Nov 2016 - My first Skylake Build

Started on this a couple days back - cracked out my 'tog gear to video the live build

Tied up with work but I intend to process the video of the build this weekend, until then, the skylake box now glows in green...

Hah... well sort of. I just tend to buy stuff with some future-proofing and this is really a 'multi-purpose' box, with (just) 4-cores as I see it. It's multi-purpose use would therefore be limited to potentially gaming, desktop or server tasks.

In any of the above scenarios - yes, rather overkill, but I'm hoping it'll still be running in 5-years time.

At the moment it is running Linux headless, with SSH only access. Got Jenkins and various other bits and pieces running in docker for the time being.

I also plan to run an RTMP container to help with my Twitch streaming sometime soon. And given the Predator X34 isn't true 4K, the demand is less. I get around 72-73fps with Rise of the Tomb Raider with maxed out graphics.

4K rigs tend to struggle around the 45 fps mark with a single GTX 1080/6700K combo. So the Predator X34's output resolution is ~2/3rds that of 4K (based on crude numbers).
