    Reliable mouse?

I'm not sure if I've just been unlucky but after Googling (I know, confirmation bias) I can easily find a lot of people with the same problem. The last two mice I've had have been Logitech, and both have failed in the same way, where left click stops working properly. Sometimes it interprets a single click as a double, and it often drops when dragging which can be aided by applying a *lot* of force, like a kg or something, to the button.

I'm just starting to question the general quality of Logitech mice and I'm not sure if I should try another or just go with another brand. The first was an MX620 which to be fair did last years before developing this problem so I could almost ignore it, but the M705 I'm currently using hasn't even gone through one set of batteries and has already become near-unusable! A quick look through Amazon reviews, without searching, reveals complaints of the same issue.

Now, the problem I have is I really like Logitech's scroll wheel - both the freewheeling and rocking. I could probably get used to doing without though.

So, what's your experience, and what would you recommend? I've been looking at the G402/G502.

    Re: Reliable mouse?

well I've always been logitech mx518 and it's done perfectly. Have 2 of them, somewhere i have a spare and a G3 or whatever it was they rebranded them. So far I've not had this failure you talk of, but I can't guarantee it won't happen at some point.

    Re: Reliable mouse?

It could just be this model and/or something to do with it being cordless. E.g. perhaps a lower voltage is supplied to the switch, and when combined with increased resistance due to corrosion or wear, the click becomes less reliable? Either way, it seems like poor circuit design as there are plenty of ways to prevent this becoming a problem.

    Re: Reliable mouse?

yeah, sounds pretty lame if they keep failing in the same way. Have you tried doing feedback via their tech support? Can;t imagine it will solve your problem, but maybe just maybe someone might take notice (though I doubt it)

    Re: Reliable mouse?

I have a couple of Logitech trackballs that must be well over 15 years old - still going strong. IIRC I did have to take one apart to fix one of the buttons - there was a plastic moulding that operated the microswitches.

Your mileage may (well, has) varied, so the design may be different and as you say, being cordless may introduce differences.

Logitech used to be very good on CS - there were posts here about getting replacements in exchange for a photo of the destroyed faulty item - whether that is still true I can't say, but it may be worth a call to their customer support. Certainly nothing to lose apart from a few minutes time.

    Re: Reliable mouse?

Another Logitech user here, had the almost ubiquitous MX518 for a couple months, then had a MX Revolution for three years. No problems with the switches but the soft plastic went manky, disintegrating into a sticky mess. Had the G700 after that, no problems apart from the paint fading and wheel going loose. That was three years too.

Now I have a G700S, three years and absolutely fine (fingers crossed). Wheel still feels precise, teflon feet fine, buttons all fine and they addressed the paint, so even after years of intensive use, there is zero fade.

So if I had to speak from experience, the G700S is a worthy replacement for its predecessor, addressing many original problems. You can use it wireless or wired, it has a door for a replaceable battery (AA NiMH) and an internal slot for the wireless receiver which some manufacturers seem to forget.

I feel that you should choose a mouse based on your button/characteristics preferences though. Reliability can be luck of the draw and IIRC, Logitech have a 3 year warranty, one of the longer ones in the business.

    Re: Reliable mouse?

Yeah perhaps I'm over-thinking this. The MX620 lasted *ages* and eventually developed this fault - had it not been for this mouse developing the same issue I would have thought nothing of it TBH. And I agree their customer support are very good, from my own experience with them in the past.

However, confession time - I've just put in some fresh batteries as the old ones were down to ~1.1v, but the battery indicator was still green. See, past Logitech cordless mice I've had would go red with plenty (like weeks/months) of notice before anything noticeable would happen. However, having used this now for a couple of hours it seems to have resolved the problem.

An obvious thing I really should have checked earlier, but was relying on the battery indicator being accurate. But it's still worth noting that right click never did this, nor any of the other buttons/functions, so it seems *something* has gone awry with the left click switch but the higher battery voltage overcomes it. I'll just have to wait and see how it goes.

Thanks for the input though, some good suggestions there too!

@AETAaAS: That rubbery overmoulding is known for going all horrible and sticky - I've noticed it on everything from tools to binoculars to USB drives, particularly if you leave them alone in a drawer for a while.

I've had a couple of logitech wireless mouse and they seemed to pick up faults pretty easily. However, I've had no issues at all with the logitech performance mx mouse.

    Re: Reliable mouse?

Update: Nope, still doing it occasionally after a battery swap, just not as often it seems. It doesn't seem to have mistakenly double-clicked yet, but it's still dropping dragged items.

You're not wrong! I have a bitfenix survivor case - "ruggedised" was how they described it. And it was for a whlle, but it sure is sticky now! Not icky sticky glue style, but like when you've peeled a label off a CD and it's left residue behind.

Have another quick Google and swap "Logitech" with any other brand... you'll find the exact same thing.
In my experience, it's mostly Razer mice that die like this.
Nothing to do with being wireless, or braided, or LED, or anything. They're switches. Sometimes an occasional one will fail. That's all there is to it.

To be honest, my G700S did this briefly, at about 2 years after I'd had it. It actually went away after a quick air-dust out and has been fine ever since.
