My new PC build for 2017

I managed to get this up and running with Windows 10 yesterday evening after work. I have a bit of a scary moment when I powered on and couldn't see anything on the display. The display I was using was one I found in the garage and turned out to be faulty. Luckily everything worked on first power on in the end. It was an enjoyable build and the case sits nicely under my desk at home. It's a fairly compact mid-tower case.

It ended up being a very minimalist build. The PC build used these components:

    • CPU: Intel Core i5 7600K
    • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z270 HD3P
    • CPU Cooler: ARCTIC Freezer i11 - Silent 150 Watt CPU Cooler
    • Memory: Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3200C16R Vengeance LPX 16 GB
    • Graphics card: Asus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 OC
    • PSU: Corsair CS550M 550W Hybrid
    • HDD: Samsung 960 EVO M.2-2280 500GB
    • Case: NZXT Source 340
    • OS: Windows 10
    • Keyboard/Mouse: Logitech MK270 Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo
    • Pen Drive: Kingston 32GB USB 3.0 (this was used for installing Windows 10)

The system is very quiet and my work laptop on my desk makes a lot more noise. The CPU cooler I used was very flexible and I mounted it so that it was blowing air upwards towards the top-mounted case fan.

Nice build, are you seeing any benefits from using an M.2 rather than a normal 2.5" SSD?

Yes, the throughput is faster than when using a SATA SSD. In fact, I've just added a 1TB SSD into the system as my data drive (connected via SATA). Whilst that is also very fast, the M.2 connected via the PCI-E on the motherboard is faster.

Very good to keep in mind cheers, I'm currently putting together a build spec and was tossing up between a sata 2.5 ssd and an m.2 pci.

Only potential downside to the m.2 is that they tend to run fairly hot, otherwise they're significantly better than sata.

Re: My new PC build for 2017

Just in pure benchmark results. I'm using Samsung's Magician software to benchmark the M.2 PCI-e SSD and Sandisk's Dashboard for the secondary 1TB SATA SSD.

That's all m.2 drives do - give you a warm fuzzy feeling when you run a synthetic benchmark. Next to none of that impressive performance translates to noticeable everyday use.

I have one, but only because it was half price and I have two fewer cables inside my case.

Agreed, I already find that any waiting is overhead from the OS or application and nothing to do with disk waits....and that's been since generation 1 SSDs!

Being able to mount it directly on the motherboard to keep the 2.5" mounting slots free was another big consideration for me.

Looks solid. Using the M.2 connector is a good call. What kind of games you playing and what performance you getting?

Re: My new PC build for 2017

The PC was built for X-Plane 11. At High to Max settings for almost everything I get 25-30 FPS at the busiest airports (lots of activity and very detailed scenery), At cruise altitudes, I get upwards of 70FPS. This is on an ultra-wide monitor.(3440 x 1440). Boot to desktop in 7-9 seconds from power-on! I'm very happy with the build as I could have spent another £1K for a few percent more in terms of performance but I think I've hit the sweet spot in terms of performance within a mid-budget.

A SSD would still be needed though
