    The Best 7200rpm HDD

As you can see, I need to choose a HDD. I was gunna get the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus10 160GB/SATA 8MB Cache £0059.33 - scan but I have started to here bad things about Maxtor and that that HDD is very loud. So, whats the best alternative, mabe even a 200GB one, deppening on price. I can spend a bit more than i was gunna on the Maxtor, but not a lot. Performance is of greater concern than capacity, authough I will prob get a high performance SATA2 HDD when thay are out and I can afford one! But i do want something reliable, not sure if there a alot of difference in performance between 7200 drives so i suppose my greatest concideration is reliability.

I always go for Seagate - reliable, and they come with a five year warranty.

i have a Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 here, superb drive, whisper quiet at idle, only slightly audible at seek, very fast. Ive got the 250gb SATA version.

I have also heard good things about seagates and the samsung spinpoints.

If you can wait - the storagereview rate the maxtor MaXLine II very highly - http://storagereview.com/articles/20...300S0-2_1.html

I'd go for maxtor after having used their excellent advanced RMA (they'll send you a new drive before recieving the old one )
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

It's a shame that those MaXline III's are like gold dust in this country right now, they are absolutely impossible to find, I was going to buy one but I'll probably end up ordering a DM10+ instead as they are on special offer at Scan right now.

I just do, over priced and tricking people who dont no a lot about computers to buy them.
Start with Dell, what really gets me is that they use thier own PSUs which only work with thier motherboards! Just trying to get people to have to buy upgrades from dell, or buy a new PC (which they hope will be from Dell).

PC world, overpriced and they are always trying to sell bad PCs to unknowing customers, telling they faulse info cause they dont do (some staff do know).

Intel, well same really but my it is changing cause I like the Pentium M. Its just that dogy Pentium 4 i dont like. And i am resentfull that i have RD-RAM in my PC and not DDR or SD-RAM.

Not trying to cause any arguments and i am very sorry if I have offended anybody, its just my thoughts. Please dont reply to this and consider it closed, back to those HDD then

I've got 3 Hitachi DeskStars and I couldn't be happier with them. Very fast, very quiet, and my oldest one (about 3-4 years old now I think) is still going strong without ever having problems.

Having said that, now that Seagate are offering their 5 year warranties, I'd probably go with them....just in case

thatsa great drive, ive used a few seagates and they're extremely quiet, except for the odd noise under seek. i have samsungs now which seem quieter all round thanks to the 'silent seek' tech.

also i just built a system for a mate with a maxtor plus 10 and although it didnt whine much the seek was the loudest ive heard for a long time! much louder than my old plus 9, maxtor are supposed to have good sevice tho.

The Maxtor +10 300GB is very quiet and very quick - recommended - the build quality is also supposed to be on a par with the Maxline's

I got a samsung 160GB 8MB about a week and a half back and although its very quiet idle its quite noisy when seeking even with accoustic managment enabled.

PC World is actually very competitive with their online store.

But anyways, the 200gb Seagate Barracudas are good. They are quicker than the Samsungs and just as fast. You could always buy a Raptor if you can compromise on space.

I must say that store is OK, but its for the knowing of us, quite different to the pcworld i was talking about. I have only seen the raptor for like £120, is it cheaper anywhere else, will i see a big difference? I have got a 160Gb usb drive so i am ok for space.

I'd reccomend the Hitachi Deskstar. I've found them to be reliable, fast and pretty quiet. I picked up a 160Gb IDE for £60! Bargain
