    Old HDD no longer works...

    Hi,

I used to be able to connect my old IDE HDD to my mobo in addition to my SATA HDD and they would both work perfectly. I recently had a problem with my PC and had to reinstall windows. I have put all of my drivers and software back on, but when I try to connect my old HDD, I just get a message during boot that I have the wrong firmware. My setup is almost exactly as it was and I have updated drivers where possible and flashed my bios but i still cannot use the old HDD.

Can anyone explain this or guide me in any way..?

My existing setup is as follows:

    gigabyte GA-7NN Pro 2 mobo
    AMD 3200+ cpu
    512MB RAM
    80G B Maxtor SATA HDD
    ATI Radeon 9000
    Win XP Pro SP2

Does the old drive still work in another system?
Check the jumpers on all of the IDE devices, if they look right, then change them all to cable select and see if that works, or if they're already on CS, then set them to master/slave manually.

I've known some systems that didn't like CS and some that didnt like the jumpers set manually. Strange I know.

I've only tried the old drive on one other system but it didn't work. I've tried different jumper setings and different IDE channels but again this hasn't helped. The drive would connect perfectly before the reinstall, i just don't get it...

If it's not working on both systems and the jumper configuration was correct i'd say it looks like the circuit board on the drive's packed up, perhaps through static shock.
