Getting the upgrade itch...
I've had my current gaming rig for 5 years now - Z77 , i7 3770 (non-k), and DDR3 1600. My GPU is a 1070 so games run pretty well in 1440p and VR, but I'm still getting that itch to upgrade as I usually replace mobo/cpu/ram roughly every 5 years.
From what I've read though, Skylake / Kaby Lake have been fairly underwhelming in the performance increases they've shown, vs. earlier generations. I've done some shopping around and think I could just about stretch to a Z170 or 270 board, with a 7700k and some DDR4 3200 RAM. Do you guys think it's a worthwhile upgrade though? I've just been reading about Coffee Lake being due for release soon, so wonder if I'd be better to wait for that? It seems even Intel are acknowledging that quad core has had its day?
I did also look at Ryzen, but I'm only a gamer and don't do any streaming, encoding etc so decided I'd be better sticking with Intel for now.
Grateful for any advice received.
Danny
Re: Getting the upgrade itch...
Unless a stonking special offer on either a 7700k or a Ryzen I'd wait for coffee lake to come out. Then you can make an informed decision with everything on the table.
Re: Getting the upgrade itch...
6 core coffee lake, even the 8600k version, is likely to be the best bet for futureproof.
Re: Getting the upgrade itch...
dannyboy...keep the board and mobo a little longer...
what SSD do you have?
Re: Getting the upgrade itch...
I'm in exactly the same position but with a i5-2500k and a 980GTX instead, gonna wait for the Intel response to Zen before dropping any money on the next PC. I'm also interested in the Nvidia response to the new AMD graphics too.

Yeah I'm definitely going to wait for Coffee Lake.
I have a Samsung 840 (non pro). System runs pretty well overall, although AS-SSD benchmarks are a little disappointing. I'm guessing this is becauase my Z77 chipset drivers are now 2-3 years old and not written for Windows 10 :)

I have a tube of something you can rub in to soothe that itch... Thermal Grizzly, I think it's called!!
Nah, nobody I know is upgrading, either. They're all waiting for the bigger stuff.
Admitedly they've also all got Titan Xs or Ps or whatever and big curved monitors, but still...
Re: Getting the upgrade itch...
Samsung 840 Evo is a good drive, I have an 850.
I would not upgrade in your position. I have a 6600k @ 4.5, and while it's faster than my 2500k @ 4.3 was, it's not something I really need. And I don't game much, but when I do, I admit the change is nice.
So stick around for ryzen 2?
Re: Getting the upgrade itch...
This is exactly what I'm doing but I'll wait for Zen+ if that Coffee Lake is unconvincing, the only times for gaming I get bottlenecked is with very modern 2016+ games, if I had a 3770k it would be much easier to wait.

Don't know if I can wait that long though....the itch will be too much by then! I'd like to think I can hold out to see how Zen 2 and Cannonlake stack up, but suspect I'll end up going for Coffee Lake before those two ever see the light of day :)

But waiting a little longer for Coffee Lake should reap serious rewards! Although, in my mind, resistance is always futile.
Re: Getting the upgrade itch...
Bleed it out to six years. Let the upset that is Ryzen settle and see where things land. It's not a good time to upgrade your core platform. Put your money in more stable areas such as a shiny new 21:9 monitor or something.

I would actually suggest this answer. Personally, I upgraded from 2500k @ 4.3 to 6600k @ 4.5 and haven't noticed a lot of difference. Games ran faster, sure, and I am happy with that other than the fact I maybe played 5 hours total since I got the damn system (can't remember when, something like 20 months ago when there was an 18% cashback deal on bespoke offers) and just sold my GPU since I can't justify it and prices are (were?) high.
I think the next upgrade for me won't be before ryzen 2 and it would have to be 8 core / 16 thread +.
The only thing I've used from my upgrade making it worth it is 16gb of RAM since I had 8 before and I've filled my 16 a couple of times running mining and a host of crypto wallets at the same time. Could have made do with the 8 though.
Would be happy to go back to my 2500k tomorrow and get back the money on my upgrade.
Your i7 3770 would benefit from an upgrade to a 5ghz ish overclocking 7700k style chip, or even ryzen 1700 @4ghz. But don't rush into it - it may not make much difference.
Re: Getting the upgrade itch...
Get Threadripper... it is what I'll be purchasing next year.
I might also get whatever the Vega+Ryzen combo that fits into AM4 motherboards is.
Re: Getting the upgrade itch...
The 2K gaming PC build is probably my dream but I think it's for the guys with dollars-to-spend. It's nothing special with 1080 special edition and i7-7700K so if you have 1070 and even i7-3770 (non-K) please don't make changes.

Yes, what I'm about to say.
So they'll update their tech every few years so It's best to wait. New is always better.
Re: Getting the upgrade itch...
What games are you running OP??
I have a Xeon E3 1230 V2 and a GTX1080,and at qHD only FO4 is really CPU limited in anyway for me.
If I were you,and things are fine, its best to wait. Coffeelake will probably be a nice upgrade, but so will a Ryzen 5 1600 or Ryzen 7 1700,but TBH I find most games run fine on my setup, outside FO4 OFC.
