Installing To USB Drive?

I've heard that you can install stuff to a USB pen drive. Is this true? If so, what kinds of things can go on and how?

Just might be useful to carry a few programs around with me TBH .

I'd like more info on this too , I think i heard firefox can do it, and probably one of the Multi-IM programs

On IRC, Kez said a program called "blackbox" would help, but I couldn't find it .
