    OCing question?

    which is better?

    200fsb x 10multi = 2000mhz

    or

    166fsb x 12.5multi = 2075mhz

i have DDR400 in my machine.

I'd say the one with 200fsb - definately.

Games love FSB but I'm not sure how much difference you'd see in windows. 3dmark2001 would benefit most but then that's just a benchmark.

Still I'd take the higher FSB.

ive OC to 200 x 10.5. all seems well. does it matter that the AGP has gone to 80mhz and the PCI to 40mhz?

Higher fsb should without doubt take precident over the multiplier. Makes stuff faster

cool. not planning on going any further. just looking to tune for the most performance at current temps which are around 54C load .

That does matter as 36mhz is as high as you should go without endangering PCI, AGP and esp IDE devices. If 40mhz works you are VERY lucky, IMHO no where near worth the risk.

200FSB is way overpraised, sure there's an improvement but outside of synthetics (ie where it's important) diffs are small even compared to 166FSB. Of course it depends upon what you do and what you use, best to test in the games and apps you use and then decide. You should find PC3200 will run with much faster timings below 200mhz which although again over-emphasised does nick you 1-3% in the real world.

Of course you are looking at a 3.8% CPU speed increase vs a 20% FSB and RAM bandwidth increase but I bet if you test (real world not synthetic) you'll find the results surprising. Why compromise though? You could try something more mid-level esp those with nForce2 (PCI/AGP are locked), perhaps 175-180FSB would be the happy medium esp if you can get that bit more clock speed out of the CPU. I bet you'd find the REAL diffs between that and 200FSB tiny if there's any at all.

Finally regarding temps, don't worry about what your mobo or apps are stating, thery're a rough guide at best, more to do with monitoring the diffs an extra fan makes or better HSF etc. O/c a little at a time testing thoroughly each time, when you find you limit either back off for the long term or else try a little more voltage (lots more heat) and see how you go. Be sure to stress the CPU especially before deciding you're stable, also use game bm's and ideally Zipping files as this helps to check your system as a whole (eg AGP, IDE, RAM) are truly stable too.

thanx very much Austin, a very informative post!

im using an nForce2 mobo. you say PCI/AGP are locked so why are their bandwidths increasing wen i OC!?

There should be a way to unlock them in the BIOS or keep them locked at a speed of your choice. It's VERY hard to see any true increases from running your PCI, AGP and IDE faster as it's not the actual device but the speed at which the 'mobo' can communicate / ship the data around. Are you sure the bandwidth increases you're seeing aren't from CPU, RAM and FSB increases?
