Power Supply: Any "Hidden Gems" out there?

Like with ALL things....some items are really exceptional value and quality. Some CPU's do a vastly better job than their spec....some mobo's own the market

So WHAT PSU do you rate highest? I hear from a rather well informed sourse that certain Sparkle PSU's in the 400W rating are exceptional.. And others? Cos I run a CPU fan, 4 case fans, 2 CD drives, 3 SCSI hard drives..... etc

    So what you running?

I personally found the 420w hiper to be damn quiet (it has three fan settings) on the quietest setting...but then after 3 months it failed on me...

then I had a variable speed 460W enermax beast, but only one fan was manually controlled, and it was noticeably louder than the hiper unit...had to give this away to a friend, seemed a very solid unit though...

now using the plain enermax 460W with no fan control...excellent, but once again, a little louder than before - would change the fans but I expect it buggers the warranty.

someone once said that Antec units are rebranded CWT PSUs...which are available from scan at a price considerably less than that of Antec ones...I'd want confirmation that I didn't imagine this though

generally my experience is that you gets what you pays for

As far as i know antec power supplies are rebranded CWT's, and you can get 480w CWT PSU for 47 quid on scan. I dont know for sure, but i got that model anyways, and its worked a charm so far

The new Enermaxes have both fans controllable, so are far quieter than the old ones. They also have had the internals reordered to aid airflow and mine now never gets above minimum whereas before the old one would frequently go up a few hundred rpm. They're far quieter out of the box than almost any quiet PSU, with only the specialist PSUs like the Q-technology (not QTec) and Nexus being quieter. However if you're willing to open it up and replace the fan, you may be better off with a Sparkle and a panaflo L1A fan from Dorothy.
