    Temperatures and things

Now, I do pride myself in keeping things in my computer reasonably cool, this prolongs individual part's lifespans and also means my room does not rise to a temperature becoming the next level of hell (despite the doom3 being played). So, I checked what temperatures things are running at using MSI's own temperature-sensing-program-thing (core cell I believe its called), and since I have a 6600gt its capable of giving me the temperatures through the display settings menu.
so, according to MSI's program, in idle my cpu is about 38C (goes up to 40 then back down)...which I'm guessing is good and all the fans I have are doing a fine job of keeping things cool. Case temp is around 23-25C, again this goes according to the sensor on the mobo...but its about right (normal room temp is 20-21 so I'd say a couple up inside the case is fine.
Using nVidia's gpu checker I'm at 48C idle with my 6600gt. Is this good?
I'm wondering why also on the 'case temp' box it says 0 ... yup, zero. apparently my efforts to have a cool case have succeeded and its now even cooler than my fridge! how can I have achieved such a huge temperature gradient from motherboard to gpu?
can anyone offer an explaination as to why this might be reading so low, or more correctly; not at all?

now, a bit about human physiology; we can sense hot and cold through a vast range, at the upper limit we sense hot but bearable at about 40C and at 42C we suddenly sense very hot and 'burn' sensations - which also creates the withdraw reflex when you touch something hot. If the gpu were at 48C i'd feel it as very hot...infact I feel it as hot but bearable when touching the underside (which will be the side upper-most when in the case) where the gpu sits, given that theres a few mm in the way i'd expect it to not be at48 but at least a bit closer.
How is temperature sensed on these cards and is tehre a way to do it more accurately - without loads of fancy kit?

There's usually a temp sensing diode in the core these days... and you can't exactly get your finger there. That's not to say they're always accurate, however.

yup, thats sounds fine. GPUs run a lot hotter than CPUs. IIRC anything up to 80-85C is fine, depending on your card of course.

The program will be looking at a sensor that doesn't exist, probably.

You might want to contact someone about that, maybe an updated bios?

well i'm using 66.93 forceware (fine as far as I know) and mobo bios is the latest it can be. if you're talking about the gpu bios I've no idea how to update that - and i'd be a little hesitant to even attempt updating it cause its working as well as I need right now and I don't want to screw it up...
