    Price Check - 4TB HDDs

    Hi All,
I'm considering upgrading my NAS. It's currently loaded with 5x 4TB HDDs. The model number is: ST4000DM000 - a seagate desktop drive. What are these worth?

I'd chuck in 3 months warranty personally as they're out of warranty according to the Seagate warranty checker - looks like I bought them 4 years ago.

    Ta...

Say £50? You can get Seagate Barrcuda 3TB 7200RPM new for £75-£80.

Re: Price Check - 4TB HDDs

I think £50 is optimistic. While they may go on for a while, a desktop drive running in a NAS (24x7?) it’s lead a fairly active life. I’m not sure what use I would have for a disk of that age, for example. Maybe £20 each. And I’d probably want to see the SMART printout as well to check things like up time, temperatures and anybreallocated sectors.

At £20 you could be getting a bargain, but the risk of failure is rising with age.

Re: Price Check - 4TB HDDs

Cex buy 4TB drives for £43.

I think anything over £40 (for the reasons Peterb mentioned) is a good price and Cex will take it regardless of uptime and activity, provided it's working of course.

Re: Price Check - 4TB HDDs

I think Peter is being a bit pessimistic - I've seen these selling for more than that Cex figure on various forums etc, though as he points out I think most people want to know that it has been checked for SMART errors.

As it happens I'm in the process of selling that exact same model today so will see what happens!

No, I avoid eBay at all costs to be honest! I tend to use classifieds instead.

Hmm, maybe I was - although personally I’d not pay £60 for a used drive of that size.

But the value is whatever someone is prepared to pay for it!

I agree with you, and it does surprise me that there's a market out there.

I think there are a few people out there with differing usage criteria, e.g. someone who wants to play films on their PS4. If the drive fails, well so be it - they're duplicated on another disk, but it's for the convenience of not needing to stream. Or if you're going to put them on a shelf and use them once a year for backup purposes then you can get two second hand disks for the price of one new. As it happens the 3TB disk I'm selling has only been powered on for 22 hours so you could argue it's not that significant a risk. But I'm only guessing... for my purposes I tend to cycle the drives after 4 years or so and so buying used wouldn't make sense.
