    I'm buying memory need advice.

I am about to buy 1gig of DDR400 memory probable Corsair XMS Extreme. My question is if I want to add another gig later, do I have to buy the same type for over clocking? I hear a lot about matched sets. I also have 1 gig of Value ddr4 400 right now. If I use this with the better memory what will I loose.

Picking memory use to be so easy!

if i understand it correctly your memory will end up running at the slower mems speed.
I would buy the same stuff if you are adding later on, just to remove any chance of problems.

I'm running an XP 2500 right now but I plan on going to AMD64 soon.So if I plan on OC'ing the memory and I can only afford 1gig right, I will be able add more?

You can add more yes. If you mix the types though, it will mean the RAM has to run at the speed of the slowest stick.

Yep, it's best to go with 2 GB from the start (2 x 1GB DIMMs).

Also, a matched set is not a bad idea but they don't always overclock better. They just improve your odds of getting a better overclock than the same RAM from seperate lots. The quality of the DIMMs is much more important.

Two Corsair XL sticks (matched or not) with TCCD chips on an NF3 A64 board will slap Kingston Value Ram silly even if the Kingston was a matched set.

Also, if you need to run 2 GB on an A64 you will not be overclocking seriously. Serious overclockers rarely use more than 256MB (or 512MB if running DC) because they overclock much better than 512MB or 1GB sticks.

I'm a big gamer, but I also do a lot of video and photo editing, dvd authoring and ripping mp3 ect.... So I am better off with 2gigs and not OC'ing it?

i thought things such as encoding and ripping were cpu dependant.

Probably better off with 1 GB of really fast high quality RAM like the Corsair XL. Only use 2GB if you get into heavy graphics with super hires scans and such. Most other things are not helped by more than 1GB of RAM at this moment.

Is there a good site about OC'ing AMD 64's? There alot of things to tweak. I would like to understand the memory clocking and how it works on the 64 chips. How is the hypertransport calculated ect...

If you use all four DIMM slots on A64 systems i believe they ALL change the memory timing cycle to 2T instead of 1T even when not overclocking, so you may wish to buy 2 x 1GB sticks from the outset.
