Looking at the reviews it seems to be more like SB/IB level or maybe lower end Haswell level. Its certainly not bad if you are playing it normally, but the issue is when you start building large settlements and modding the game, and this is where SKL/KL/CFL shine in the game.
The main issue is minimums:

HardOCP is one of the few review sites to actual test the game using a settlement. I have a Xeon E3 1230 V2/Core i7 3770 and I can confirm settlements can crash FPS especially if you start building huge ones and many of them. I tested this with two playthroughs - one with very large settlements and many of them, both around 500 hours, and my previous one where I didn't really do many and the performance was significantly better. The main issue is with increasing NPC numbers the game gets harder and harder to run and a large settlement seems to cause performance issues a whole cell - it tends to push one to two threads massively and a few more to a much lower degree.
Look at a few reviews, the game is one of the worst for Ryzen and also has the issue it likes high memory clockspeeds too,and Intel has an edge over AMD in that regard too.
Even then ARMA III is lightly threaded but shows relatively better performance,so its probably Bethesda(again) not optimising the game for new CPUs.
OFC,I am not saying Ryzen is not unplayable, but its not ideal for the game. Sadly it also probably means unless Bethesda pushes a patch to improve performance on Ryzen,or Raven Ridge or Pinnacle Ridge is much better,it pushes me towards Intel.

Looking at the HardOCP results it's not surprising, FO4 is not setup for large numbers of threads so it's more clock dependent, like many games still are, so that 1700x is being beaten by both the intel i5 and i7 which are running at higher clock speeds.
Interestingly when running crossfire the ryzen is beating the older gen i5 2600k at a higher clock speed.
But all told there's not much difference between the 3, interestingly all the peaks are almost equal it's only the troughs that differences show.

Its the worst of both worlds sadly. Bethesda obviously tried to multi-thread the engine but it ends up not only needing two strong threads but another 4 reasonable fast threads at a lower level. Hence a 6C/6T Core i5 or a 4C/8T CPU will provide generally better performance than say a 2C/4T or 4C/4T CPU.
The minimums are the main issue, especially with the larger settlements and mods,as it means performance can get very peaky indeed, with FPS suddenly going down. Its the one thing SKL/KL had over previous Intel CPUs in the game - a decently large increase in minimums, which is also partially down to the fact, that both Ryzen and SKL/KL/CFL show very good gains with faster RAM in the game.
This is what fast RAM does for the game on a SKL/KL Core i7:

Ryzen does not do well with minimums in the game, which is the main issue I have. I can see my GTX1080 at qHD only at 60% in settlements, and two threads being pushed the most.
Plus the game NEEDS an SSD to run off it once you build large settlements, mod it etc,as it tends to stream data off a disk repeated(but at a low level),so a normal HDD is actually noticable.
Edit!!
This is how CPU limited it is in a settlement.
Look at the minimums - even at qHD with a GTX1080 the minimums are the same as at 1080p using a GTX1060.
To put in context I have a GTX1080 with an IB Xeon E3 1230 V2/Core i7 3770 and my minimums in my worst settlements are more like 25FPS to 30FPS,and sometimes it can quickly dip down lower.
In this playthrough I have 200+ settlers on the map, etc.
When I move out of settlements performance is much higher.

Eugh so Amazon have fallen through on the G.Skill memory which is a bit of a pain (no idea why they're so hard to get hold of over here) so will likely be getting a set of Team Group instead (notably these https://www.overclockers.co.uk/team-...my-087-tg.html). Aria have the G.Skill available so may just get that if they have better Ryzen compatibility

That TeamGroup set is a great set for the price. Also, I wouldn't worry about QVL list too closely, it's only RAM that has actually been tested on that board, and does not mean RAM not on the list won't work.

While I do agree with you cascadde, QVL is the safest option if you're unsure of the platform / memory controller / microcodes.

Be Careful on the Internet! I ran and tackled a drive by mining attack today. It's not designed to do anything than provide fake texts (say!)
It's not really that big an issue, if your ram is worst case and not compatible, that's only not compatible at the higher speeds it'll still be usable at JEDEC standards all ram is.

So finally got around to building this morning (carbide air 240 case was a Xmas present) and pretty impressed.
Bios seems excellent on the board and the build was pretty easy with all the components listed. Most awkward bit was the 280x. Too wide for th case once the power cables in so need to either find right angle adaptors or replace the graphics card. I’ve recommended he goes down the new gpu route. In order for cables and card to fit need a max gpu height of 115mm. It’s just a case of what card. I’m leaning towards a 1060 6gb as the 580/570 doesn’t seem to be great vfm at the moment. thoughts?
Went for an EVGA 1060 6gb SC in the end after the eBay 20% Off came up. Nice and compact with a fair chunk of ram so should be ok for few years at 1080p.
Ordered exactly the same kit (minus graphics card) for myself so will be doing a bit more of a detailed review of it all if I have time all going in a thermaltake core v21 case.
