    Gaming upgrade needed

Hi my son is looking to upgrade and has asked me to post on here for help, this is what he texted me

965 black edition overclocked to 3.9 GHz. AM3 mobo, Radeon HD 7870. Can play battlefront II on medium but if i load up a video on the internet at the same time my graphics driver maxes out and crashes. Cant launch origins. Plays other games medium. Looking for something that can play modern games and games to come in the next couple years at high 1080p

So any help on what direction he should go for

    Re: Gaming upgrade needed

Ideally upgrading both the CPU and GPU should give decent gains, but I suspect perhaps a GPU upgrade might be more useful:

    http://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tp...i-test-gpu-cpu

Look at the GPU chart and change the CPUs. However, games based on the current Frostbite engine used in Battlefront II shows optimal performance online with CPUs with over 4 threads,ie,apparently less stuttering, etc.

The problem is any Frostbite based game online seems to run smoother with more than 4 cores, but if they upgrade to an RX580/GTX1060 they will probably be CPU limited. OTH,I do think they chose exactly the wrong time to do this as the RX570 4GB was under £200 last weekend for example.

So perhaps it is worth doing a graphics card upgrade first and moving on from there??

Yeah I would wait for a (possible) deal on an RX 580 at least it should be relevant at 1080p / 60 for roughly a couple of years.

If you lurk HotUKDEALS you may get a silly bargain it should show up somehow at a good price within the next 4-6 week.

    Re: Gaming upgrade needed

If he was doing the whole thing now he might actually save money, Ryzen and Intel CPUs are discounted in a few places as is RAM.

    For 1k you could get an i5 8600k, 16GB DDR4 3000mhz, 1070ti, new PSU

Or even a Ryzen 1600 + 1080 with some discounts.

But if you were to upgrade right now, I would look into upgrading the GPU to a GTX 1060/RX 580 (PSU dependent).
