    Laptop Interference - dodgy PSU?

My brand new laptop, an Acer V17 Nitro makes an odd 'interference' type noise, almost a dull stuck fly/bee type noise. Reminds me of an old Hard Drive seeking for stuff. It only makes it when the laptop is under high load (a game etc). But during the game, unplugging the Power lead stops it instantly, plugging it back in brings it back. It sounds approx 70% of the time, coming & going every now and then. It appears to be coming from between the fans - with them either side of it. The speakers are on the underside but at the front of the laptop, so this isnt coming from them.

When the laptop is under light load, I don't have any problems with it, plugged in or otherwise.

Before I ring Acer and have it out with them, can anyone suggest anything?

    Thanks

Bugger, after youtubing it I think you are right! Sounds very similar.

Googleing it shows it to be not uncommon on highish spec laptops etc, any suggestions? Return to acer or is this likely to be an "accept it as a quirk of the the system" type thing?

Manufacturing defect or nature of the system?

It'll depend on if you think you can live with it?

Depending on how new it is the retailer who you got it from is probably your first port of call

It can be either a defect or just the way the system is designed,as some people can get replacement products which still have coil whine.

It depends on how annoying it is and whether you can get a replacement from another company with similar specifications!

Is the noise still there when the Charger is not plugged in? I also recommend you not to leave the charger in all the time and the reason why is because when your battery is fully charged and the charger is still plugged in it will then over charge your battery which will then damage the cells inside it, just a heads up for you.

Re: Laptop Interference - dodgy PSU?

If you feel the laptop was not worth the money due to the coil whine I guess send it back, they will likely refurbish and resell it. That's about the extent of it.

If you take out your battery when you are on adaptor power you will avoid carved_eye situation but then I believe he may possible be wrong about the overcharging part. When I plug a USB amp meter in between a charger and my phone, as the phone becomes fully charged by the US B Charger the amperage that is fed to it tapers down. I'm sure laptops have a similar functionality. .

Li-Ion battery’s have very precise charging requirement, starting at a constant current regime, then as the last part of the change phase, switching to a constant voltage regime. The charge regulator may be built into the battery case itself or be in the laptop case. Li-Ion batteries that are overcharged, even by just a small amount, can fail with er... ‘spectacular’ results.
