    SoHo Laser

    Hi All,

I work from home three days a week and my wife is a local councillor, and the use of the old bubble jet is getting expensive !
Can anyone recommend a SoHo colour laser ? And a supply of cartridges ?

Up to £100 for the unit...

    What do you think ?

For one second I thought this thread was about lasers in Soho.

    Edit!!

Family uses a Dell 1250C colour laster printer - third party cartridges are not that expensive last time I checked.

    Re: SoHo Laser

My mum has a very inexpensive Brother laser (sorry can't remember model number) it's only black and white but it's a massive step up from all the printers I've had and she's had before. That's going back to the old daisywheel days.

Try and google for a comparison and reviews and check online (ebay I guess?) for genuine toner replacement cost. Many printers come with carts which have lower levels or toner than the replacement will offer yous.

    Re: SoHo Laser

I have a cheap Lexmark colour printer which gives great results, but the toner cartridges are expensive. (Remember, you think a printer is for putting images on paper, the printer mfrs see it as a devise for consuming expensive ink!)

My Brother MFC also gives good results and the cartridges are relatively cheap on - but it’s monochrome only.

Some mfrs are offering some form of subscription package, you pay a monthly fee, depending on use, but the toner is ‘free’.

I don’t think there is a lot to choose among latter printers, so it comes down to the average cost per page.

Some printers have a relatively short life drum as well, so you need to factor in the cost of that.

    Re: SoHo Laser

I'd say be careful with brother printers, esp the more business oriented ones, they tend to have a lot of other bits other than the toners with hard limits on them.
They are decent printers, it can just be a bit annoying when 3 or 4 bits hit there limit after each other, other brands of printer can have the same thing however they tend to be packages of multiple parts in one bit, brother seems to like breaking them up into separate units, makes individual parts cheaper but more things to stop you printing.

Toners and other bits (like fusers and transfer rollers/drums) have chips on them that keep track of page count for that part, once that page limit is hit the printer stops and will refuse to print anymore until it's replaced.
Older printers had soft limits, where it'll warn you but still keep printing, but many now have hard limits.

On non-original toners, again be careful, while some are fine some can be very dodgy.
For accurate colour reproduction avoid really cheap toners as they tend to use crappy pigment.

Must admit I've always liked HP for lasers (although the color laserjet 2500 was junk, is was quickly replaced by the 2605 which was much better but we are talking early 2000's and now I feel old )
Samsung B&W lasers are good, not sure about their colour lasers
