Help me please. I'm out of ideas

Here's my problem. I have the following

    Shuttle SN85G4 V2
    A64 3000+
    WD 80gb hdd
    9600XT with cat 5.2
    Windows XP with SP2
    most recent nforce unified drivers.

1st problem: The front panel's two usb ports are not working.

2nd problem: The sound is not working properly. What I mean is when I plug in my speakers I don't hear anything. WHen I plug in my headphones I hear something but the sound is VERY soft.

    Any help is appreciated. thanks

Just a thought, not sure what the sound chip is on the mobo but check that and download the driver from the manufacturers site instead of using the nvidia sound. This worked for me on a similar problem on an Asus Nforce board.

The quality and volume of intergrated sound varies from motherboard to motherboard, but it really shouldn't be that low. I'm sure you've already checked the volume controls, but make sure master volume is to the maximum. Also, another common mistake I ALWAYS make, is to knock the little volume dial on my headphones to a lower volume. I don't know if your headphones have this too, but again, its wortha a try if they do.

Also, try Conan's idea. If it is a hardware problem, then that is most definately the only fix.

Have you checked that the cable from the ports to the mobo is plugged in?

For your USB front port problems check this thread out..
Something about cutting the wire to pin 10 on the USB header.
    http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=57472.0

For your sound check your speaker configuration to make sure you have plugged the speakers into the right port and that the configuration is correct for the set up you have at home i.e. 2 4 6 speakers e.t.c.

Also make sure it isnt muted, also you could remove your drivers for sound and install the latest ones which come from realtek ALC850 codec

well I will give that a try when I'm at my gf's house since its her computer

I know the volume is not mute as I have checked. All the volume controls are turned up. WHen I have my headphones plugged in I can only hear the sound VERY VERY Faintly. Only noticable in a quiet room.

I didn't plug or unplug anything from the mobo since it was all pluged in when I bought it but I will check it out next time.

With regard to the problem of the Front USB ports, a problem I had when I owned the SN85 was that my extended G/card (at that time an FX5700 ultra) was pressing down on the usb header on the motherboard, and causing my card reader and front usb ports to stop working......perhaps something similar for you?

Yeah, I know. But as part of the Nforce 3 chipset Nvidia use the realtek alc650 / AC97 sound chip. What I mean't was to install the driver for this over the top of the nforce drivers. This solved the problem for me on an nforce2 board.

/edit.......this is th elink for the drivers on the Realtek website. HTH

Definitely get the RealTek drivers. But be sure you uninstall the nVidia ones first. Just the audio drivers.

Then go through the set for the RealTek audio screens. They are different than the nVidia ones. Make sure you have it set up for your speaker system. If you have it set wrong it will perform badly if at all.

    well heres the update:

I installed the realtek drivers to no avail. my friend said the plug to connect the front panel devices was probably loose or seomthing. I checked and the plug is in fine.

    here's what I notice:

the front panel is just behaving improperly. The speakers I plug in don't give on any kind of sound. when I plug in my headphones from my ipod I hear something very faintly that could only be heard if the room is really quiet. when I tested the speakers on my ipod it works. the usb panel provides power but nothign works when i plug something in it. when I unplug my mouse in the back and plug it in the front the optical light is on but my mouse doesn't work.

Sorry but I may have missed something earlier, do the speakers/headphones work from the back ports?
