    Missing bootmgr

A bit of a odd one.

    System
    Motherboard - Gigabyte Z77-D3H
    CPU - i5 3570K
Crucial_CT500MX2 SCSI Disk Device (SSD) with windows 10 & programs. (C)
2TB Western Digital WDC WD20EFRX-68AX9N0 SCSI Disk Device (SATA) for backup. (D)

I unplugged the WD Hard drive and when I attempted to boot I got 'bootmgr missing'. I reconnected the WD drive but still coultn't boot the PC. I run start up repair and this couldn't fix the issue. I then restored an image which worked. I have never had this happen before. Why would disconnecting the D drive cause the PC not to boot?

Thanks for any help in understanding what happened.

    Re: Missing bootmgr

When you installed windows did you have the D drive plugged in? Always best to just have 1 drive plugged in when installing Windows as it can become confused regarding bios boot order and install the bootloader on the wrong HDD, even when installing Windows on the selected one. That's my guess.

Next time just unplug extra drives and/or (and I think) ensure the boot order in the BIOS is up to scratch. Keep the BIOS updated too.

    Re: Missing bootmgr

I have removed the D drive in the past without issue. Boot order in Bios is OK, Checked that as well. My system has been running well without issues for a long time. Makes me weary of attempting to swap drives etc

    Re: Missing bootmgr

the bootloader is installed to the first disk detected at boot time - if you look in your BIOS you'll find that you can change this order.

My guess is that when you installed Windows you installed the bootloader to the D drive, then when you removed the D drive and reconnected it that you connected it to a different port, which was then lower in the boot order than the C drive.

I believe Admin tools - Computer Management - Disk manager will tell you this, but off the top me head I can't tell you exactly what you're looking for. Google prolly will.

    Re: Missing bootmgr

But the fact that my pc boots OK means the BCD is OK, right?

    Re: Missing bootmgr

Still trying to understand what is going on. Here is a screen shot from Disk Management
    https://ibb.co/cinbRS
Which shows the the C drive is the boot drive

When I searched the D drive I found the following
    https://ibb.co/iDct6S
Which seems to indicate that the boot files are indeed on D drive. Can someone help me understand what is going on?
    Thanks

    Re: Missing bootmgr

C is your Boot drive, which has your Operating System on.
D is your system drive, which has your bootloader on.

I know that the above is counterintuitive, but that's the Microsoft way of doing things - more info at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System...boot_partition (Linux does it the other way around)

    Re: Missing bootmgr

Thanks, When I originally installed Windows 7 the system drive was also on the C drive. Would the process of upgrading to windows 10 have changed this? Is there a way, apart from reinstalling windows 1o to move the system drive to C?. What about the unallocated space o the C drive?

    Re: Missing bootmgr

I would look into EasyBCD Edit, which should be able to move the bootloader files to your C drive. I haven't used it for ages or for this so I don't have more specific instructions. There is another program out there that can do this but I forget the name too.
Windows rescue CD may be able to do it too if you just boot it after disconnecting your D drive but I would suggest that would be harder.

    Re: Missing bootmgr

Windows 10 boot DVD repair options couldn't sort out the issue with the D drive disconnected. That was the first option I tried.
