Feb 2018 - best DDR3 mobo and CPU combo
Lo people
Most of us are stting on DDR3. Many of us need an upgrade. We're sat on SSD's and half decent GPU's (which are unaffordable to upgrade so we need to stick with them)
DDR4 is to expensives so new chips are out.
So..... this thread is about you guys throwing your gloves in the ring with your ideas and links
For example:
Athlon X4 880K BLACK Edition for £66 and a Gigabyte F2A68HM-HD2 for £42.50

Re: Feb 2018 - best DDR3 mobo and CPU combo
Curiously, all my spare DDR3 (i.e. not currently in a working system) is sodimms pulled from old laptops. I have quite a lot of it, though....
But you're mostly looking at indsutrial or embedded mitx boards for DDR3 sodimms, so they aren't all that much use sadly... :(
Re: Feb 2018 - best DDR3 mobo and CPU combo
Does this need to be new??
I would say a SKL/KL CPU and one of the DDR3 motherboards. SKL does scale better with memory speed, but if it is an older system,it will be still a good upgrade. However,it needs to be lower voltage DDR3.
Edit!
The other alternative is Haswell.
Second Edit!!
£185 for a Core i7 6700 with two year warranty from CEX:

Re: Feb 2018 - best DDR3 mobo and CPU combo
stick with New, so people can definately buy it.
Re: Feb 2018 - best DDR3 mobo and CPU combo
Ebuyer sell the Core i7 6700 for £264:
https://www.ebuyer.com/722916-intel-...SABEgIuivD_BwE
It has a cooler. The Core i7 6700K costs a bit more on Amazon, but the main improvement is the higher stock clockspeeds:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Proce...words=i7+6700k
I looked at the motherboard CPU list and the cheaper Core i7 7700 is not listed sadly!
A comparison between 1866MHZ DDR4 and 2133MHZZ DDR4:
https://www.anandtech.com/show/9483/...h-generation/7
However, higher speed DDR4 does have a bigger impact on SKL performance for non-gaming stuff, but on B series boards that is the fastest DDR3 or DDR4 will go:

Some games do love memory bandwidth though:

Hence you need to find reviews using 2133MHZ DDR4 to get as close an estimation to 1600MHZ DDR3 performance.
OTH,when it comes to cost the Core i7 6700/6700K are overpriced by current standards.

If anyone is on a Phenom II, the FX 8350 is even cheaper now. Check motherboard compatibility first though.

The FX8300 is around £80,and is a 95W TDP jobby,so should have better compatability too.

The only issue is you have an overclocked Phenom II X6,the FX is not a big upgrade overall, and TBH a Core i7 6700/Core i7 4790K utterly destroys it in many games.
The 95W TDP Phenom II X4 SKUs,could generally hit around 4GHZ,and if you overclocked the CPU-NB too,the performance jump was noticable:

That is the problem with FX CPUs,once Haswell came along,if any game did not thread that well,a Haswell Core i3 often beat the FX8000/FX9000 series, and it could barely match a Haswell Core i5/Core i7 in the best case scenario.
It gets even progressively worse with online games, especially MMOs,etc where the engines don't thread well.

You said you couldn't find a mb which worked with SODIMMS,so I found you one! :p A Core i3 4130T is cheap:

So probably just above £50 all in if you include a cooler.

This is the combination i have been running for a while, not everyone needs to buy the latest tech at staggering prices for what they do.. maybe looking a little wider you may find yourself a real bargain..
