AS5 question..

Having taken my A64 CPU and XP120 off of my RMA'd Asus mobo, will I need to clean & reapply the AS5 paste when I put it all back together in a week or two's time?

I didn't touch any surfaces I shouldn't have. I put the CPU back in its little plastic container, and covered the XP120 with its original bag so no dust should get to it..

If I do have to reapply, what sort of surface cleaner should I use?

isoprophyl near to 100% pure as possible.

So I will have to re-apply it?

No way round it really. Im gonna buy some cleaning sloution to mine as ive reapplied a few times without doing it and my temps seem to have risen.

To clean it, as johnnr892 mentioned, you need to use an alcohol based cleaner. You can get some tape head cleaner which should be fairly cheap (probably able to pick some up from a pond shop or something).

Before you re-aaply, check out artic silver website for instruction of how to apply the grease the most effective way.

I did read over the AS website before I put it on the first time, though I'm glad I had to take the HSF off again, as I think I might have been a little stingy with the silver...

Anyway clean it with any organic solvent... or just water, under the tap.

It really doesnt make that much differnce.

Also if you expect to be taking the heatsink off within say, a week, then just use cheaper sillicone paste, nothing wrong with it.. and theres not THAT much temp difference.

How about 'Medi-swabs' from a first aid kit? They are impregnated with Isopropyl Alchohol, and I think they're about 70%.. Is that good enough?

i would have thought that would be fine matey.

last time i had to remove AS i used nail polish remover. The machine still works to this day as well :)

Nail polish remover is largely acetone which works just fine. You'll want to give it a wipe over with isopropyl alchohol or meths after using that though as it can leave residues.
Personally I use some isopropyl alcohol I picked up at maplins, it works. ;)

I have a question for you guys - it's related, so I may aswell post it here.

Yes you do. I'd generally scrape the TIM off with something non damaging - a credit card works surprisingly well, or even a knife if you're careful not to scratch the metal. Then clean any residue with isoproynol or acetone and apply the AS as per directions on their website.

Akasa have a TIM remover, never try with AS5. Always remove AS5 with tissue and tap water myself.

I find AS5 too greasy for water, an alcohol based cleaner will cut the grease better.
