    Cool Pc!!

I think the time has come for me to try and do a bit of OC'ing! I have learnt on this site that components will last longer if they run cooler! And as my PC is still running with the 2 original fans, which upgades do you suggest i buy before i make the Oc step?
PS my cpu is prescot P4 2.53mg and the case is a ATX. Dont know if that helps!
    Thanks in advance

You have a few choices, you could buy some decent fans from reputable companies like Thermaltake and Coolmaster. An alternative would be a water cooling solution (Quieter and more efficient). I would see how you go ocing with the fans that your components came with.

Make sure you have good airflow in the case first of all. No point having a great CPU fan if your case is warm inside as it'll just cycle hot air. Then as skattrd suggests get a large cooler some AS5 and away you go.

Watercool or phase change are options but very expensive ones so if you got a bit of spare cash knocking about have a look at these options.

Make sure you have good air flow outside the case as well. I burnt out a psu because the air vents at the back of my case were blocked by a curtain and the hot air had nowhere to escape.

Pressy's quite hot when u OC. U could try Hyper6 or XP120 with AS5. With good cooling, your cpu can get 3G on air.

    you sure its a prescott?

i didnt know they came in 2.53 (aka 533fsb) versions, i thought it went:

    2.4A (533), 2.8 (800) etc.

the prescott would be a big disadvantage in trying to cool in a pre-built pc case, if it is a prescott get the best air cooling you can afford, them things chuck out serious heat. and as said before, airflow is vital.

EDIT: Yep a quick scoot through Intels site reveals there is no prescott 2.53 processor. But thats an advantage.

    Thanks for your help guys!
The PC at the moment is in one of those cupboards incorporated into my Desk, and to allow more air flow i have taken the hardboard back off but its still probally to enclosed for OC. Maybe i should have it near my feet or even on top of desk... "wife wont be to pleased"! Also as i have those wide IDE cables Would it make much of a difference with the slimmer round type ?
Re DW:i didnt know they came in 2.53 (aka 533fsb) versions!
You maybe right! All i know its a P4 and on the 478 socket! System Info says this: x86 family 15 model 2 stepping 4 genuine intel 2533 Mhz.

Socket 478 has both prescotts and northwoods, download a program called CPU-Z (google) and it will tell you all you need.

its probs a northwood, which is cool, as they are slightly faster (at most things) and run much, much cooler, making small-scale overclocking (like that on air) much easier.

...Hope thats the case! As my pc's enclosed under my desk, should i get one of those hot air extractors which fit in the pci slot along with the fans or can you recommend something else? (not water)

EDIT; As i have just done a clean install due to HDD failure, i did not have my mobo drivers, so the chipset, ide, agp etc are all running on the windows drivers. Would it matter or will CPU-Z still work ok?

CPU-Z will still work - it will tell you all you need to know. I would be surprised if your cpu was a prescott. Your sig suggests a prebuilt system from mesh b4 the prescott was introduced, so good news Ensure latest drivers are installed b4 o/c.

Not a P4 expert but with adequate cooling you should be able to push the P4 a bit . Try to give the case decent cooling, "enclosed" is generally not good as you recirculate the hot air.

Yes it is a northwood! I dont know what made me think it was a Presscot. So i want to put a copper CPU cooler and one of those hot air suction things that fit where a pci card usually goes. any suggestions on which type/make?
