    IDE disk enclosure

    Guys,

I've got a few spare IDE disk knocking around of vairying sizes.

I've got a few SCSI disk enclosures which just plug into a external port on a SCSI card.

is there such a product that you can use to say put 4 IDE disks in and connect to the PC via say a USB port or a Parallel port or even an internal IDE cable threaded through to the outside of the chassis ?

I'm just thinking out loud but is there any sort of disk enclosure that would do this or you could recommend. I've certainly seen stand alone single IDE disk in a USB enclosure.

I am sure you can get these, try scan or overclockers. They are basically HD cases that you connect the HD into and then connect the case via USB or firewire to your PC.

You're going to need something with a fairly nifty backplane to overcome the two disks per channel limitation for IDE disks. Highpoint do a double, the RM1200, but beyond that the only devices I've seen are the fairly costly NAS storage devices which usually come with disks and are probably overkill for what you want. The RM1200 is designed to work as part of their e.SATA solution with the RocketRaid 1542 for instance, and is available a s a kit (card and enclosure).

The enclosure hooks up via external SATA (hence the card) but takes standard IDE drives internally.

    edit: There's always THESE GUYS

nichomach - great solutions. 2 devices per channel isn't a big deal for me as I don't have 20 disks spare just say 7 or so, so 2 devices of 4 disks each would be great.

Matt1eD - genius solution. What the hell is that device used to raid the disks together looks really good fun. I'd need basically an external IDE controller with 2 channels with a USB interface and power. that could be a good product.

I'm not sure what is connecting the three of them, but quite a few (even wiht floppy drives have been done - some of the posts have links to external projects-). I think they should make it commercially!
