939 or 753 - which direction are AMD going in?

I always thought that it was 939 for desktop parts but 754 for server parts but the Inquirer seems to suggest 754 even for the low end.

Sensible / knowledgable comments only please.

Isn't that a bit of a piss take? AMD announced at the launch of the AMD64 series, that 754 would be budget, 939 would be more high end? And already they are gonna start taking out 754?

I told a friend of mine to go for 754 only a week ago.... Whoops.

I heard about them phasing out the 754 more or less as soon as the non fx 939 chips came out... im pretty sure they did annouce it and the 754 becoming budget was just a rumor (prob made by the people who just spent out on 754 stuff and convinced themselfs that it cant be obsolete already )

    Bleh.

Only a matter of months(!) before they release a newer chip and the 939 becomes the budget chip.

S754 won't disappear, but I reckon towards the end of this year they might phase out the S754 Athlons and just sell Semprons- although I expect that mobile A64s will remain. I should think that the bigger manufacturers will continue to want S754, not least because the boards are a little cheaper to make.

In 2006 AMD plan to switch to DDR2, which will bring a new socket (socket M2?). At that point they'll standardise on the one socket for their entire range (although I don't know if Opterons might continue to have a socket that's similar-but-different).

Well, hopefully they won't try and intergrate the desktop and server socket into one package..... I think the 940 Registered RAM fiasco taught them that...
