The right gaming mouse

Hi,

There isn't a specific sub-forum I can find for peripherals so I'll post this here

Any gamer would know that good, solid mouse can help to play better. My question is, what are your opinions on the best gaming mouse under £70?

It's a little to large for my hand and when clicking, I only really click towards the top of the mouse and it doesn't always register as sweetly as I do when I click at the bottom end of the mouse where your finger tips are supposed to be.

I've tried changing how I hold the mouse but it doesn't feel right and I'm looking for a new one

Any suggestions on a new mouse? I'd prefer a mouse with a smaller form factor than the G500.

Logitech G9x (now sadly discontinued but you can still source them easily enough)

I have the G9 and can vouch for it. I have large hands but it would definitely be okay for someone with smaller hands as it is quite squat in its dimensions. Really good for FPS imo, its served me well but didn't know they had discontinued its younger brother.

Avoid the Razer Mamba. Razer's lousy drivers are what finally drove us to abandon the Mamba and move to the Gigabyte Aivia (which we've had no problems with).

Cyborg R.A.T. 7 is comfy once you get it set up right. plus if you find that your pinky drags on the mousemat, just pop the pinky ledge on it

I've been using the Razer Deathadder for roughly 5 years now and found it to be an amazing mouse for roughly £50, unfortunately it died recently and I couldn't resist replacing it with the Razer Deathadder 2013. I'll never use another mouse as long as they continue to make the DA.

There are loads of good mice around, Razer, Steelseries, Zowie, etc. All depends upon what you need, grip style, size, buttons, etc.

I was messing about on SC2 the other day at my mates, he has a SteelSeries Xai and it felt awesome. Its not to big and got a nice grip.

I'm astounded at how poor the ergonomics for mice are. For example the buttons on the side. 99.9% of mice have the two buttons one infront of the other. It is difficult to press the furthest away button without pressing the other one if the thumb is extended. If you have big hands (like me) then it's sometimes impossible to switch buttons using the thumb without moving the whole hand. So instead of looking at changing this, manufacturers insist on having those two buttons the same height instead of a configuration that lets you feel where the button/rocker switch is. Would cost nothing to change.

The most natural thumb movement is up and down. Hold your hand out level and straight, fingers together. Now move thumb forward and backwards. Now move the thumb up and down. Much better. Therefore instead of mounting side buttons forward and back ward it is far more natural to mount them one above the other. Very few mice have that arrangement.

Other buttons are not in ergonomic places either. Put your hand on your mouse. Most people have the longest digit (middle finger) resting on the mouse wheel. Where does the tip of your finger rest? Is there a button underneath that fingertip? Thought not. It's one of the reasons I used to love my MX1000. Not only did the wheel have a button but your middle finger had another option. Why do manufacturers insist on placing a button way behind the mouse wheel? Pointless. [rant off]

I still use my MX1000 (£65) now and again some 9 years later for general browsing. I like most of the button placement and the ability to customise with Set Point is great ( CTRL+PgUp cycles left in FF so I map that to scrollwheel left click. PgDn goes right. So I can move left and right through tabs by using mouse only)

I'd happily pay £200 for a mouse that met my criteria.

The closest I've found is the Logitech G700 - I quite like it. It should be similar in size to the G500.

So it's a little shorter, wider, higher and lighter than a G500. Prices vary - ebay £45, Amazon £55 etc.

Only way to be sure is to hold one (or any other mouse), which is the only reason for walking through the doors of PC World so as to "test" the mice on display!

Replaced my old Razer mouse which i had used for years with a RAT 7 some 6 months ago and was impressed with how you can custom fit it to your hand. The button layouts are fine as well because you can within reason move the positions on the left side to fit your hand and finger length. There is a lot of customization with it and at first it feels weird but you get used to it the more you use it. The only bad point i can raise is that 4 weeks ago it suddenly developed a fault and the OS said it had malfunctioned, ive had it replaced with a new one (thanks Scan) and was happy to do so because i like it so much. These type of things happen and i could just be unlucky and the new one will work for years hopefully, only time will tell but i didnt let the fault put me off.

Personally i use Logitech G403 wired edition, price is under 70£ on amazon.
Sensor Pixart PMW3366, able to work about 32-33 hours without the illumination.
The dimensions of the mouse (in mm) – 124 x 68 x 43, weight – 107 grams (with a load of 117 grams) without the cable.
Every grip on this mouse was comfortable to me. In games, I use the palm-finger tip grip.
