You wont find any graphics cards that will go back that far. I have a PIII 800 (so one of the higher end PIIIs), and the motherboard only has a AGP 2X slot. The bare minimum you will find is required in the shops are 4X and even those are hard to come by. They can have my TNT2 graphics card if they really want though (for £50).

Best bet is to use a utility like aida (or whatever its called) to get a spec of his motherboard, and then he can work out how easy it is to get parts and, ultimately, if it's worthwhile. However, you can pick up base units on ebay pretty cheap for 1+GHZ systems, or he could buy one from the local paper which would do for now. He'd only have to spend a hundred quid or two (if he can stretch to £200 then he can afford a new motherboard, sempron 2600+ rocessor, 512MB ram, and a fairly ok graphics card). Then he can just plug in his hard drives, monitor, etc, and away he goes.

It depends on the chip as to the FSB. Slot P3s are 100/133, although some can be RAMBUS (but very very few are).

Chances are id say that it uses SD RAM, but again without knowing the CPU speed wouldnt be able to tell u if its PC100 or PC133.

Now dont quote me on this, most P3 slot m/b went up to AGP2.0. Its my understanding that there is backward compatibility with AGP. So in theory a AGP 4x card may work. (Iirc a 8X wont work as they claim to be only 8x/4x). Best to check with manu facts website of the card. Worst case senario, scan have an offer on a PCI 5200, so u could stick that in instead.
