Neo 2 Plat + AMD64 3200 + PC2700

Hi, I am thinking of buying a Neo 2 Platinum board and a AMD64 3200+ chip for it, I am going to use my current 1GB of PC2700 RAM.....
I have NOT installed a M'board + CPU from scratch before - although I can do everything else!

Question is:

1) Will all this work OK togeather...

and....

2) Is it just a simple case of sticking in the board in the case, putting the chip/heatsink/fan on and fireing it up???
Will I need to alter jumper settings? BIOS? etc etc.... how hard will it be to do I guess is what I'm saying?
I dont want to try this and fry everything!!!!

Advice on this would be appreciated!!

I'm not 100% if your RAM will work with the 3200+. It has a 200fsb, and is multiplier locked, so you may be forced to overclock your memory to PC3200 speed, if it cant take that, it wont run.

As for putting it together, first thing you want to do is put the chip and cooler on the board before you put it in the case. The screw it in, attach all leads, and before you power up for the first time clear the CMOS.
Just remember to have your hand on the power cord in the PSU just in case it goes titsup :)

they should work together as long as they are both the same socket (ie 939 i think for plat 2).

It should be just a question of of diconnecting everything from your old mobo, putting your cpu in the new mobo, fixing the new mobo in place and connecting everything back. you will have to look at a few things in the bios, such as the order of your hard drives and optical drives (master/slave settings) and if you have sata HD then there could be a question of loading sata drivers before booting and setting up raid or not( but i think that is only if your trying to install windows a SATA HD and not if windows is already installed).


Its nothing complicated at all.
If you do some reading up on hexus or tomshardware and read your mobo's manual it shouldn't take too long and everything should go smoothly.

ANd dont forget thermal paste when u put cpu in

That combo should be fine. I have the same but its got 3200 memory in atm. TBH I was just about to put my Neo2 Platinum WiFi edition with 3500 Newcastle onto ebay if your interested. Reason for sale is that I have just purcahsed a Asus NF4 SLi setup.

I have the board and a 3000 in with 3200 ram...it goes like a rocket compared to my last one :) (which was a dell P3 500 :rolleyes: )

It should work with PC2700 but will probably perform about 5% less than with PC3200. In fact AMDs own spec for the memory controller on the CPU will step it down to 333fsb under certain conditions.
& the CPU isn't multi-locked - it is half-locked, you can run lower multis than default but not higher;)

1) Disconnect the old Motherboard from the casing and give the inside a good cleaning m8. Always a good idea when your changing parts, use a Compressed air supply if possible for the bulk of it then use dry wipes with solution for the fine surface dust.

2) Check the manual to see if you need to set the motherboard jumpers or it has a jumper free mode. Beware that jumper free may not always work, I have found this to happen even with newish boards.

3) Install the CPU and Heatsink/Fan while you have the motherboard uninstalled as this will allow you a lot more room to mount it correctly.

4) Clear all cables from the motherboard area to insure a trouble free motherboard mounting.

5) Check that there is plenty of clearance between the CPU Heatsink and any other heat source and that there is some ventilation for it.

6) Install just your GFX card and memory only and then connect all cables relating to your PC being able to boot.

7) Boot for the first time, wait and see if it boots correctly. If not check noise codes with manual. Also if you get nothing you can try setting the jumpers to your CPU and FSB settings if the motherboard has that option

8) Once you have got a basic stable boot you want to start adding in any other devices like HDs, CD-Rom, PCI cards. I tend to find you want to add in PCI cards one at a time so you can sort any conflicts one by one.

9) Start reinstalling Windows, remember you may need SATA drivers for the install if your using that HD data transfer format.

10) Have fun once done! :D

My brothers got the K8N Neo2 Platinum, with a A64 3000+ and his old Twinmos 2700 166mhz Ram (2x512MB) and it works fine :)

The motherboard runs at 200 and the memory at 166.

I didn't know you could boot without HDD plugged in, :rolleyes: very handy to check basic system is OK!!! My main concern is that I will have to change jumper settings but I guess that will be explained in depth in the manual that comes with...

Eh yes, it probably will.
At very least uninstall your old mobo drivers before moving your hdd from the old board to put on new.

Or do a repair install.

But really a fresh install is best ...
