Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few years?
OFC,I am talking more about PC gaming.
Nvidia ATM,seems to forging forward. Volta is out,and we are now starting to see Turing/Ampere prototypes. AMD,OTH still is finding it hard to match Nvidia on performance/watt in many segments, meaning they are loosing out on laptops with regards to dGPU,Vega got delayed, and if it were not for mining, would have been uneconomic to sell at RRP,against cheaper to make Nvidia cards.
Rumours say Raja Koduri wasn't given as much funds as he wanted to make more gaming specific GPUs,as R and D was pushed towards non-gaming segments.
It seems we won't see a new gaming GPU this year from AMD meaning Nvidia will probably push ahead again. Navi apparently is only a midrange chip for release in 2019,which could only mean a high end chip in 2020. Intel also is entering the market in 2020,meaning more compeitition.
So,what do you guys/gal think, will this turn out like after Bulldozer was released, and Intel was reining supreme, where competitors will do the minimum to get sales, and prices will start to increase?? Or do you think AMD might be able to pull something out of the bag(like they did with Ryzen)??
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
Money did seem tight for Vega, but with the sucess of EPYC and RYZEN there should be a bigger pot, we should see the results in 2019 I reckon.
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
I really hope so, Vega was such a letdown. I'm not loyal to nVidia so more competition on the highest end is always a good thing!
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
I'd say probably not - AMD doesn't do many high end graphic cards where nvidia has a lot more experiences in. They can't just suddenly release some one day and expect them to be perfect.
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
Oh besides, I think we all agree that vega is no value for money compared to like for like nvidia cards...
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
no I disagree jseven15 (though welcome to HEXUss) . Yeah Nvidia may have some developers in their pockets and more money and stuff like that but my Vega 56 (when I plug it in again lol - it's in a scan return box! It was fine...) was at least as good value as the nvidia almost equivalent when bought on release day.
AMD retain a lot of good will among people who are well informed on technology. They should pull through well. I hope so. It's not like choosing a hand bag is it?
Having said that, looks like nvidia's next gen coming soon will brute force FPS (perhaps somewhat wrongly) in a manner that your average teen or 20th gamer would a call good.
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
You have to turn up to win a fight, and it doesn't feel like AMD want to fight the high end atm. Having said that, Nvidia also seem to be focusing on AI chips and throwing gamers scraps just like AMD, but they are throwing better scraps.
Let's hope we get some interesting cast-offs from the console market.
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
I think they are able to compete but think it's a bit too risky to go all in.
I'm still amazed at the pricing/performance of Vega, like many other I was expecting a lot more. Hopefully we will see something in the next 2-3 years that makes nVidia nervous.
I think the problem is the amount of R&D that nVidia appears to be burning through....unless AMD pick up the pace they will always be playing catch-up....AMD also have to deal with GameWorks etc.
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
I'd like to think they will, especially considering the huge effect Ryzen has had on the CPU market. Even if you're a staunch Intel customer, you've benefited from Ryzen.
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
I think they will. Maybe not at the top end but as long as they create a solid mid range cards that's competitive in die size on the same process tehy can make enough margin to keep Nvidia on their toes.
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
Hmm interesting question, but I think there's a distinction between ability and what they choose to do. AMD's last few GPU generations seem to have been heavily influenced by their semi-custom business if some articles I've read are anything to go by, however RTG is now under new management and their finances are looking better so who knows. However it's obviously still going to be a few years until we see any major changes as a result, so we'll likely just have to wait and see what was already in the pipeline. I guess 7nm Vega being released as a gaming card or not is something which could be decided this late on, but I wouldn't expect it to change the rankings much in terms of raw performance.
As others have said there's also a difference between competing and fighting for the halo product - AMD probably have little interest in doing that in the gaming market at the moment. I think I recall AMD also saying (or at least not denying) they're considering separating the gaming and HPC products like Nvidia have been doing, so that could be interesting.
I'm not really sure what to expect but I'm not expecting anything major any time soon. Maybe next year depending on priorities. It would definitely be cool to see another launch like Polaris, that did really well for the market it targeted, but it did leave Nvidia to run away with the higher end of the market for quite some time, and Vega didn't really seem ready. I still wonder if going all-in on HBM for their high end stuff was a good call given the position they were in, and how much difference it actually made to things like cost, power and performance. I mean good on them for pushing forward with R&D, but given the market they have to be pragmatic too.
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
They'd better be able to otherwise I might not ever be able to upgrade my 1080 Ti.
RTX 3080 Ti will probably cost £1800 at this rate!
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
They did have a lead within crypto mining space. Maybe that's where they think their margins are.
It would be good to see them put out card with lower power consumption and price whilst maintaining performance.
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
I think they'll compete in several market segments, but not all of them.
Re: Do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia again during the next few ye
The optimist in me wants AMD to bring some decent high-end cards to the market, but the realist knows this isn't going to happen for some time.

This. They're more likely to go after the mass market that the RX580/70 series and below are aimed at. That's where most of the sales are.
AMDs big focus for gaming GPU tech should be ensuring they're in both the next Playstation & Xbox as they are now. Not only does this bring in revenue it also gives them a competitive advantage when devs port from those systems to PC, the Xbox 1 uses freesync for example.
