Thinking of ugperading to athlon 64 and this board seems to good to be true
NFORCE4-A939
Anyone got or used one?
Its either this, or get a abit nf7 and continue with athlonxp

Theres a lot of us using 939 nforce4 based motherboards - most seem to have the asus A8N SLI deluxe, and a few are looking forwards to recieving the DFI version once it arrives.
Peformance wise - it blows my old watercooled AMD athlon out of the water, and the inclusion of SATA 2 support as well as having loads of sata ( read more than 5 ). I did have a few issues with powering, but the latest BIOS - 1003 fixed these problems and now my systems running media centre 2005 fine with no problems.
Onboard sound is good - and the newer nvidia drivers from their website are usually the best to get as they also fix a problem with the firewall installing with SP2 applied to windows XP.
If you have any more info you require - give the folks on here a holler and between their collective brains they can usually solve or advise you if you have an issue
I've got a MSI SLI platinium. Apart from being very fussy on memory and what looks like a dodgy pci card (not a good combination if you need to solve why it won't boot) its about the nicest machine I've had in the recent past.
Mind you the northbridge fan is rather noisy (a fanmate to half the speed helped a lot) and I had to replace half the motherboard to install the cpu heatsink (a rather quiet thermaltake silent tower) so its not for the faint hearted.
Curiously the MSI cards don't seem to record the temperature of the northbridge chip. Its rather reduced silencing opportunitys as I wouldn't trust passive cooling without at least a vague clue as to the temperature of the chip.
sorry, ddnt mention, its not just the chipset, its the specific baord,
ECS NFORCE4 a939
If you are going NF4 you will have to get a new Graphic card for the pci-e bus, you will not beable to use your AGP based Card. on top of a new cpu and motherboard. If your not into overclocking in a big way start out in this order - asus, msi ,gigabyte or Abit ,Dfi with dfi being a real overclockers board.Originally Posted by ricflairandy
well my pricerange is slim, so i can only really afford the ecs one.
just wondering what people think of it if anyone has used it.
After working in a shop which sold ECS motherboards, and having about 1/3 of them come back faulty I wouldnt touch one of theirs with someone elses barge pole. If you give us a rough idea of what your budget is, and exactly what you want (mobo & chip, +gfx?) we should be able to spec something up for you
Well basicly, i was just going to upgrade my current motherboard and ram as my old board with sdram was faulty. So ive got hold of some geil dual channel ddr400 2x512 and i was going to get a k7n2g or a nf7 to just stick my current 2400xp in.
Also just got a radeon 9800pro, but been offerd some cash for it should i decide to move to pcie.
Want to spend as little as possible, but should be able to recoup some of the outlay through selling my current gear
i would say the complete opposite, ECS are class, they may not be feature packed or particularly stable with the BIOS'es they ship with, but with some flashing and a reasonable amount of time spent fiddling with various options they can become nice little boards. Above all, they are cheap.
i say go for it.
(i find ECS boards dislike Quick Boot immensely, once i disabled that and flashed to the modified bios on my old K7S5A it was a lovely little board, which is now in its box awaiting its come back, which might be media box or similar, i havent decided)
hmm, im torn now, its either that ecs board , or sticing with athlonxp for now and getting the nf7
if cost of new kit is problem stick with what you got and get abit nf7-s v2.0 motherboard and ram pc3200 best you can afford for nf4 use later on. AMD 64 is good but no need to rush down that road ust yet.
Well I used a uATX Winfast M/b and i think its a good buy for £55+VAT. Nothing fancy on it just on board sound. Tbh what is ur current rig?
Currently running
xp2400
pc chips m810lmr (cost me £23 quid 5 years ago and has been more stable than anything else ive had or seen since then, however now starting to have a few probs, could be ram though)
2x512mb pc133
2x80gb harddisks
radeon 9600xt (running on 1x agp due to crashes, again, probably due to board).
Since last week when i finally got fed up with the lockups ive been getting latley, i have purchased
phantom silver case (my old case was starting to get noisey at night with vibrating metal, not nice)
geil pc3200 dual channel kit (2x512mb)
Sapphire Radeon 9800pro
Im all out of cash now, so im just going to go for the nf7. Cant stretch realisticly to a64 yet with the final at the weekend and a new baby on the wya.
went for the abit nf7 ver2.
just baught it now, along with a new 200gb harddisk.
What do you guys reckon ill get overclocking wise out of my 2400xp
If it was a choice between than and an ECS - i'd stick with the nf7.Originally Posted by ricflairandy
