It's a shame the ECC ram specs don't go over 2666 speeds (and even that seems rare) as it seems more relevant than ever. It would seem ideal with 3200MHz+ RAM to know for sure that it isn't flaking out rather than relying on an overnight memtest and a spot of luck which is where it seems to be atm.

Intel is far more plug and play though, and its much easier to hit higher RAM frequencies with something like CFL even using identical RAM kits. The other issue is Ryzen seems to generally respond better to higher frequency RAM than CFL too!

Since I have a slowish 16GB 2400MHZ RAM kit(with Micron chips) I bought on the cheap last year, sadly it means I am more likely to buying an Intel system unless RAM prices go down. Ryzen is better value, but the RAM side does not help it and in my case makes it more expensive. Even if I were to sell my potato RAM and buy something better,it would be another £100 on top of the price, than sticking with the RAM I have now.

I would be more comfortable running a Core i5 8400 or Core i7 8700 with the potato RAM I have than say a Ryzen 5 2600/2600X,and even if the Intel CPUs are worse value, have a worse platform when it comes to longevity and a worse stock cooler.

The issue is I can get a Core i7 8700 and mini-ITX motherboard, and it will essentially cost me less than a Ryzen 5 2600X and a similar mini-ITX motherboard with faster RAM.

True lol. I set memory to XMP and it went straight to 3200 I think so all good. I may try to tighten up the timings later

Re: Which cpu, mobo & ram?

Tbh I'd take the 8700k - faster for games, and not bad for other tasks. Unless you happen to be a professional video editor or something, then ryzen would be the better choice, but otherwise the 8700k will be plenty for general use as well.
