    Chair Recommendations

I'm in the market for a new chair to use at my PC - being now fed up of paying £100 every few years for a chair that's initially super comfortable but only lasts 2 years or so before the parts start to wear out. Typically its the gas lift/reclining part that starts to fail on these cheaper chairs meaning that they no longer lock firmly in position.

I've been looking at the so called "Racer" type chairs e.g. a DX Racer, as the quality can be superb..but the general consensus seems to be that they are very over priced and not worth the money. So, can anyone recommend some alternatives?

Key features i'd be looking for are:

Real or fake leather with good padding - no mesh backs or cloth..
    height adustment
Recline adjustment - ideally able to lock in any position (not a simple 2-position system like most)
    Full height back with headrest
    Adjustable arms
Suitable for "shorter" people (im only 5'4)

Not interested in LEDs/Silly colours/speakers or other tat type features that "gaming" chairs usually have - just quality and the above feature list. Budget is around £300 or so but not set on how much to pay....

I'm struggling to find something outside of the DX/Noble type of chairs which as mentioned, seem to get a bad rap amongst the community (despite reviewers going mad for them, which is always a bad sign!!)

I should add that currently I have the "managers chair" from Costco which has lasted 2 years before the locking/gas mechanism has started to go. I'm going to stay away from buying another.

    Any thoughts?

I have one of these (available in black or black and grey) - I got the grey one.

Very happy with it. Foldable arms so can play guitar in it (and push it right under desk), it rocks back so comfortable when you stretch, easy to build etc. Can get a little sticky on humid days, but no worse than other chairs I've owned and for the price I think it's excellent.

You can't lock the recline to a given angle, the angle between base and back is set. But you can control the stiffness/resistance of the rock so it tilts when you want it to, and not when you don't. I've not found it a problem.

    Re: Chair Recommendations

This might sound odd but have you considered ikea?
granted is is a mesh back might not be exactly what you're looking for . . . However it comes with a 10 year guarantee and you can easily give it a test by going to an Ikea store.

All told I would expect the gas lift to last longer than 2years on a £100 chair, £30-40 yes, £100 no, what chairs have you been buying?

Aren't Steelcase chairs supposed to have a good reputation? Very expensive yes, but a quick search can find secondhand ones for around your budget.

    Re: Chair Recommendations

Racer chairs and anything from a gaming shop or with a gaming brand will be utterly overpriced tat.... You'd actually get better quality and value-for-money just by adding RGB strips to a wooden chair!!

Head to a reputable office furniture supplier and find a chair designed for 24 hour use - Something like an emergency services despatch operator's chair. These are usually super-adjustable in all the areas you mention and in several different ways (ie, the arms will go up/down, in/out, forward/back and twist). They'll also be super comfy and are designed to be in continual use, so will last and last.
The best ones will have car upholstry type leather, but cheaper fake leather-like stuff can also be had.
You can sometimes find second hand ones cheap at clearance houses, too.

I was about to do this my own self but a free chair became available from work, else I'd already have one I could recommend.

    Re: Chair Recommendations

Thanks for the suggestions so far - i'll take a look. Seems like it might be best to head down to an office furniture place and take a look - I really don't like general "operator" chairs with a gap at the bottom, but ideally something like the Knnarps Capella would be great (if I can get it with leather/pvc)...if it will last then i've no issue pushing the budget (or going 2nd hand).

@Pob255 - ive been buying costco chairs for the past 2; its not strictly the up/down bit that goes but the part that locks the chair in position starts to wear which starts to lead to bad posture/discomfort etc.

Shall keep looking thanks for the suggestions!

I cannot vouch for the quality or anything. I was only posting that as a gap example.... It's not even leather!

    Re: Chair Recommendations

I have a Vertagear Gaming chair. It's very solid, but perhaps too solid.
The recline on it requires real effort, and doesn't seem to be adjustable tension. I had it bought for me as a Birthday present, it looks the part, and I reckon it will last years, but I wouldn'y have bought it myself.

    Re: Chair Recommendations

noblechairs EPIC or noblechairs ICON. I've tested both, amongst other chairs, and I'm currently sat on a DX Racer which feels terrible in comparison.

There's also the Nitro Concepts S300 on offer at OcUK at the moment, at just £199.99. That's a fantastic chair if you prefer mesh instead of leather/ faux leather.
