Nope, almost all flash based media is slower than HD's :)

and iirc, XP will pick up USB based mass storage devices during setup, so you wouldnt need a IDE converter :)

Some of the newer format are getting very fast, so it may be possible in the near future. But Correct me if im wrong, but do they not have read and write life time. As in

I.e. 10,000 full reads and writes

Would be silent though, which is nice :)

maybe when the speed of CF cards get really high then it'll be possible? reminds me of my dads old amstrad pc1512 where to load the equivelent of windows you had to swap in and out 5 1/2 inch floppies several times! thank god for internal HDDs...!

Yeah, 10K is the generally accepted "home user" lifetime expectancy.
There is a PCI device which will take SDRAM and act as a hard-drive. However, as soon as it looses power, it will loose its contents being volatile based. Remember, it would need unplugging from the socket though to loose the contents, as PCI has a standby voltage. I wonder if they have a backup battery on there to ? :)

Thats PCI idea could be a very nice idea if they could build some sort of back-up function into the Card. Say some sort of back-up battery store or way of plugging in a battery.

It would be a very nice fast way of using windows for sure. Sounds like a piece of hardware for EPOS or fast use PCS.

But you would need a custom OS for the right back of the OS to the memory. Very specialist is it not?

Why would you ?
The ones ive seen simply take older (non DDR) SDRAM, and windows see's it as a hard-drive. With the correct drivers, surely windows could be installed to it. If it can be installed to a pendrive, i cant see why it wouldnt work with somthing like this ? :)

Sorry I mean in being able to reapply the windows install to the memory if the power fails and you loss power.
