Upgrade Advice - CPU/RAM/MOBO or Graphics?

Hey all,

It's been a while since I upgraded my PC and after playing ac : origins I'm starting to realise things are a bit old.

Only problem is I cant really afford to upgrade everything at once so It's going to be a choice between Graphics or new cpu/mobo/ram


My current spec is in my profile but to make things easier here are the main parts :


CPU Intel Core i5 2500K
Motherboard Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z
Memory 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz Corsair Memory Vengeance Black
Graphics Card Gigabyte NVIDIA GTX 970 G1 Gaming Edition

Any help would be awesome

If you run the system performance monitor whilst playing ac: origins, does the CPU max out or the graphics?

An idea of budget?

From the hardware requirements of that game, the CPU seems the weak link. Which is unfortunate, given the cost of a CPU/mobo/DDR4 bundle.

I would say the CPU is the issue for that game.

CPU was 100% and graphics was about 98 %

Budget I've not really put much thought into as I know cpu/ram/mobo is gonna be a lot more than just graphics.

I had a feeling that the CPU/RAM/MOBO would be the option lol.

I haven't really looked at the CPU market for a while so what is best in terms of AMD/INTEL? Whats the current sweet spot for price/performance.

I'll be using the PC for work as well as gaming although As a python developer most projects don't usually stress the cpu too much.

From what I can see Intel has the edge in that game.

I was only using ac : origins as the Reason I noticed things going slow so whilst I am playing it atm I'd want something that will be a good all rounder.

Budget wise I reckon 500 is the top end I could go to atm

The Intel CPUs tend to be a bit faster for gaming,but the Ryzen CPUs seem better as an allrounder. However,Intel K series do overclock better.

For instance a Ryzen 5 2600 and a MSI B450 Tomahawk can be had for £250ish. RAM will be another £150 to £180 for 16GB of reasonably speed stuff.

Another cat amongst the pigeons is my case is micro atx so Looking at boards it would seem I cant get the high end Ryzen boards?

Is your 2500K cpu overclocked at the moment? If not (and if you've got sufficient cooling), overclocking it would be a 'free' way to add a bit of performance....

Which resolution do you game at? The 970 GPU should be good for 1080p in modern games, but anything higher might be a bit much for its 3.5Gb (effective) VRAM.

I am hoping to get a Ryzen 5 2600 as an upgrade to my old Xeon E3 1230 V2 . The Ryzen 7 2700 is nice but I am not so sure it is worth another £100 extra though.

The chip isn't clocked but With the age of everything and only 8GB ram I reckon it's time to upgrade.

That's what i was thinking the 2700 seems nice but 100 quid is quite a jump.

Also is the x version's work it ?

I would definitively go for a cpu/mobo/ram upgrade because the 970 still holds its own and the cpu might acutally bottleneck the gpu so i would recommend going for a cpu/mobo/ram upgrade eg. Ryzen 5 1st gen is very cheap right now and works very well and they have cheap motherboards like A320 if you want to OC go for a B350 and try to get 16 gb of ram since 8 is kind the bare minimum in 2018
