    Another CPU/Motherboard/Ram Upgrade Thread - Ryzen 1700X

So being a stupid sucker for a bargain I gone and bought a Ryzen 1700X as it's super cheap right now. (£149.99)

That means I need to buy a new motherboard and DDR4 ram but I've not looked into AMD stuff in over a decade so I have no clue whats good or compatible. The main things are it must be good quality and relatively cheap, so all help will be appreciated.

The motherboard I'm looking at this Gigabyte one as it offers most of the features I'm looking for and I faith in Gigabyte motherboards and it's cheap. I know 470 chipset is supposed to be better but its £90 more expensive for the equivalent motherboard from Gigabyte.

Gigabyte AX370-GAMING K7 AMD Ryzen ATX Gaming Motherboard Socket AM4

As for RAM I'm at a loss as it all seems very expensive right now and I dont know whether higher speeds & better latencies are really that important, never used to be with Intel kit but I know AMD maybe different.

Yeah I've seen a lot of people jumping on that Ryzen 7 1700X deal. Bit hard to know exactly what to recommend without knowing what you use your PC for. Gaming, Video Encoding, Overclocking etc

Memory is vitally important because of its relationship with how the Infinity fabric connects the dies inside the Ryzen CPUs. Performance will suffer with slower memory. Ryzen is also very fussy about memory - as I've learnt with my Ryzen 7 2700X. Getting the rated memory speed can involve a little luck. Things are getting better as BIOS support matures for Ryzen. Still though you are looking at paying more for your memory then your CPU.

I guess what I'm saying is its hard to recommend building a new system around a 1st generation Ryzen 7 1700X CPU unless you have a usage scenario that will benefit from the huge multi-threaded performance of the 1700X.

I would be more inclined to get an X470 motherboard just because of potentially better future compatability TBH!!
