My new rig is pretty much finished, bar a few final touches, and I just realised the best bit about building a new rig.

My dad's getting an upgrade, so I'm off to visit him tomorrow to give him my old mobo/cpu/mem and take away his stuff for use in my mum's computer. Hand-me-down PC parts rock... come on, you all know it!

The best bit is that you've been using the hardware and are completely familiar with it, so rebuilding it becomes a doddle... far easier than the first time when you didn't realise the best way of plugging that connector in, or that you should set that jumper BEFORE plugging that cable in, etc.

I agree - my old K7-750 with 20g hd etc first went to my bro and is now used by my aunt for email, surfing, word processing, photos etc. My old MSI KT4 ultra, geforce 2 ti, is now used successfully by my parents.

All were expertly put together and set up for the end user by yours truly.

just done the same for my parents, easy as pie. makes a nice change to build a pc with no problems at all

But the worst thing is when u get itworng. More specifcally BSOD during windows instalation or no display when powering on.

Both of them happened to me in 2 out of 3 pc's i built (1 still strugling, with BSOD) and that is why i am NEVER EVER in my entire life going to build a pc for myself or for someone else. There are good deals to be had at Novatech, Dell, HP and others....

That's a shame, speedy; it's really not that hard and provided you adhere to usual practices re: static order of driver installation and so on, it can be very rewarding. Personally, while I use prebuilt corporate style machines at work, my own workstation there is a self-build (and to get the equivalent performance from Dell at the time would have cost me, I kid you not, about a grand more), as is my home machine. I like the fact that I chose exactly what went into those machines.

^^ Fair point that it is cheap . But not about 'know what's going in' coz all otehr manufactruer except retail liek hp and dell put in what u like for eg Scan or Savastore. I always use anti static more specifically an antistatic wrist band and follow all instructions extremly carefully. It is confirmed on both of the machines that went wrong it was confirmed motherboard was DOA and i am a happy bunny now .
