What is PC1600???
I need to buy a friend some ram on the cheap and have come across
PC1600 which is stated as DDR.
My friend has an old 1.4 GHz Athlon (before XP) which i thought took PC2100.
Now looking on the net there seems to have been 200 MHz and 266 MHz FSB athlon 1.4's. How can i know (i.e what should i get my friend to look at) which it is.
any thoughts?

My maths tells me that PC1600 is 100mhz (200DDR). I think there were some old Socket A chips that ran on an FSB of 100, so I assume the RAM was for them. However, I think the 1.4 Athlon had an FSB of 133, so it used PC2100 - or at least, that was what I've seen used!
You may as well get PC2100 anyway since I don't think it'll be much more (if any more) expensive, and can just run at the lower speeds.

Just get your friend to download and run CPU-Z or WCPUID. It'll tell you the bus speed the processor is running on.
Find out the make of the motherboard though; Pre-XP Athlons running on DDR were pretty rare- as is PC1600 to be honest, I can't believe you couldn;t get PC2100 for a similar price.

Ive seen PC1600 on ebay go for like £20 for a GB or just a few quid for 512 MB.
Nobody really wants it.
Ebay is now rubbish people pay near enough the same price as brand new the nutters.
I will just get at least PC2100 just to be on the safe side.

"What is PC1600?" A : Rubbish ;)
My Athlon 1.4Ghz used Pc 2100 (DDR 266) on a 266 FSB, and I think others used DDR266 on a 133 FSB. Either way, 2100 is the right choice.
Edit Having properly read Rave's post (Hiya!) My 1400 was a Thunderbird (before Xp 'Palomino's') and I think it was the highest they ever went, Ran V hot not oc'd a bit, I Loved that chip :p Swapped it out for a 2000(2400+) thoroughbred again on 266fsb and PC2100 266ddr, very cost effective upgrade if your mobo will support it (Mine needed a bios flash, no more).
