    Motherboard prob ?

    Hi all,

Posted a query over on the vendor support section of this board (Scan), thought it might be worthwhile asking here for some advice.

    Have a new build :

    Ryzen 2400G
    MSI Tomahawk B450
    Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB)
    Using graphics from the APU

I'm getting the CPU debug light on the motherboard and then nothing, it appears to be random-ish too. When the system boots it's stable - I've had some success with removing CMOS battery (have to go with defaults), last attempt at leaving off for an hour and then switching on gave the CPU debug light again (a subsequent reboot and I'm back in).

    What I've tried :

    Replaced PSU (original was working)
    Reseated CPU
Tried an out of box build
    Memory checks out via memtest

RMA'd mobo + CPU supplier can't see anything wrong. Has anybody seen anything like this before - to me it looks like a motherboard problem, but why would it not replicate when tested by supplier ?

    Thanks,

Might be worth updating to the latest bios if you can.

    Re: Motherboard prob ?

Does the manual give any troubleshooting tips as to what exactly the CPU debug light means?

I agree that updating the BIOS should be the next thing to try.

It's not overheating is it? Have you checked the cooler is attached correctly?

    Re: Motherboard prob ?

    Hello all,
OK, tried living with this (can put up with an extremely intermittent fault), although as of last night it's stuck on CPU led - just attempted a boot now and that too is stuck. Normally it would resolve after being left alone for a bit.

Can confirm I've reseated CPU, updated BIOS, tried an out of case build. Temps are OK, had to upgrade CPU heatsink and fan after stock developed an issue. Temps under load are good - mem test + stress tests pass.

At this point I'm scratching my head, bad caps ? If it were shorting I wouldn't get anything, plus when it does boot it's stable. I do feel it's the mobo at fault.

I've emailed the vendor directly, even though they couldn't find a problem it may help me now that the PC appears stuck on CPU debug led (although knowing my luck it'll probably resolve when tested)

is there any correlation between when it runs and when it freezes - ie only first run of the day, but not after use etc?

Do you have access to a multimeter? Have you checked your PSU outputs and cables to make sure they are behaving, particularly the 24 pin job going to the mobo?

There doesn't seem to be, it's gone two weeks without issue. Generally in the past if the case led lit, then it'd boot OK starting from last night that isn't the case anymore. Don't have a multimeter, but I did check the output via bios and it seemed OK.

Managed to get back in this morning (after much fiddling), noticed a new bios version unfortunately can't install because I can't get two stable reboots in a row

To flash the bios IIRC it does the flash part on the restart, so it shouldn't need to boot into OS, just shutdown and trigger the restart successfully. Does it get through post on a restart?

Try taking out everything, just 1 stick RAM and one boot drive on the most basic port going. run graphics off the mobo. Can you get two boots that way?

Have to get into the bios, then select flash - at that point the system reboots to load the flash utility. Attempted to remove ram, disks etc no luck, going to try again later on.

Only other thing I've noticed and it's probably my eyesight, when the case power led lights up there's a brief flicker.

do you have another PSU you can try?
Is the mobo mounted properly - ie no loose screws, bits of thermal paste where there shouldn't be, stray bits of solder etc?

    Re: Motherboard prob ?

are you sure re having to get into the bios to select a restart? Some of the OS launchers can trigger the reflash automatically for you - hence if it will auto restart from the OS shutdown you might get lucky. You'll need to look into your specifics though as it's different for different manufacturers and I don't have much firsthand knowledge of MSI boards

    Re: Motherboard prob ?

Motherboard mounted ok , I ran it outside of the case and managed to replicate the issue, is it possible to have a partial short ? Re flash, there is an option to do this via USB and a button at the back of the mono - must admit I am keeping that as a last option

When you ran it outside of the case was it with the same PSU?

    Re: Motherboard prob ?

No different, it was the antec 550w I scavenged off my old machine (fully working), I replaced that with a corsar 550mx (I think), if anything the antec is probably a better PSU. The thing PSUs can run the PC OK - if it posts OK.

Just removed CMOS battery again, going to give it an hour or so and will try again
