    Soundstorm is gone forever

We can today reveal that in a briefing with NVIDIA we have been informed that Soundstorm, the popular NVIDIA sound technology is dead. This has been confirmed to us whilst talking about the NVIDIA nForce 4 SLi (P4 Edition).

****wittage of the first water, if you ask me (not that you would...). Of course manufacturers wanted to keep costs down, but damnit SS was one of the main reasons that I paid MORE for my NF7-S than for a board without it. Quality-wise it beat the snot out of my previous Creative SBLive (and WHAT a pain in the fundament THAT was). It was a real unique selling point, and it does annoy the hell out of me that the nVidiots have canned it.

    Thumbs down

That is the worst possible news. I paid for the most expensive motherboard (nf2 Asus A78NX Deluxe) at the time. I bought it with upgradability in mind, and thank goodness I did!! I have just bought a surround sound system and seperate AV receiver in order to decode the dolby digital from sound storm for use with games (although I have a seperate Live 5.1). Now there is no point upgrading (yeah that's right, I'm not buying any of your nice new shiny motherboards nvidia) simply because of this.

Now that is gonna leave everything FUBAR.

So what do I (and others) do now. Well, since I'm now not gonna be buying an NF4 board, plus chip, memory, several sata HDD's etc.. looks like i'll just keep my overclocked barton 2500+ (or upgrade and overclock the 3200+), and buy an AGP graphics card (admitadly either a Nvidia 6600gt/6800gt or ATI x700pro/x800pro).

So basically, until creative or another company (Phillips/hercules?) get there acts together and actually make a PCI Express sound card that encodes dolby digital, I sure as hell ain't upgrading, because I refuse to allow my brand new (expensive) av receiver to go to such a waste and suffer such crap quality sound in games. All this for the sake of not making (or even selling off) an encoder.

Rant over (but still stunned/amazed/gutted at Nvidia). Sigh business is business.... "Hear it the way it's meant to be heard" anyone ?

    Matt

As I said in another post on this subject, as they apparently are using the Intel sound system on NF4-P4 - will they perhaps use this across all platforms?

Guys - calling people *ankers and things is far from appropriate.

    Please keep this focused.

    Basta.... nah kidding.

But is a shame, I still use NF7-S and it really is a nice bit of kit.

The cost must outway the sales though and thats business I am afraid.

IIR - the main reason is that Soundstorm requires a Dolby license, and frankly - not all mobo makers are willing to pay for this.

So moaning at nVidia isn't the issue - it's the mobo makers that didn't want to fork out the extra few quids....

Sorry but that sums up me feelins for nvidia right about now.

Thge bring to market a product that chaged the way people saw audio on the desktop.

Now they go kill it off, Nvidia just lost all respect i had for them.

I do not see me upgrading from my current SN45G V2 now, sure it's old tech but it works slap a x800xl/x850 in and this baby will live for a few more years.

Davids been over this before and iirc he proved it was not the license that did it.

Ah well I can't recall every post ever made

(However - the Dolby license isn't exactly cheap...!)

The Dolby thing might be changing from what I heard - the new boards are deliving ADAT audio instead.
