Maybe a silly RAM question, but...

CPU-Z correctly identifies my RAM SPD as 2-2-2-5.

Why then, does my DFI mobo (set to Auto), choose 2-2-3-5 or 2-3-2-5 settings? I thought it was supposed to use the SPD info to set correctly?

The funny thing is, with the mobo on Auto (and the looser timings chosen), my memory latency and read scores in Sandra2005 actually improve!

As an aside, I ran the RAM with 2.9v instead of 2.6v, and with the Auto 'looser' timing settings, all of last night and my 'memory read error' in HalfLife2 didn't show up once..

I'm not overclocking yet - I'm just trying to get a better understanding before I do - but I assumed that it was the norm and better to use tighter timings when running at stock speeds, no?! And why should I have to run looser timings than I paid for at stock to get better performance?!


Please educate me, I am new to the nitty-gritty of timings/ram/ldt etc..

the tightest timings arent always the best. With nForce2 chipsets its best to set the tRAS on your ram to 10 as it gave the most bandwidth.
Its just a case of suck and see to find what works best for you.

As for why the DFI doesnt pick up the right SPD, iunno. I always set it manually anyways :)

I downloaded A64 tweaker but have not had a chance to play yet - Will this allow me to alter memory timings on the fly from within a live desktop, or what?

Apparently not true on nForce4 - it has dropped into the 5-7 area (but still need to check to see precisely which your setup prefers).
