    Fairly clueless about PSUs...

I am building a new P4 Prescott pc on a budget. I know very little about psus and i have always used the cheap rubbish that comes with the equally cheap cases. Id appreciate your comments on the following or any other power supplies up to about £50. I am after a good trade off between power, noise and price (who isnt?).

Here are some relevant parts of my system (subject to change) to help give an indication of my power requirements:

Prescott 3.0e (EO stepping) @ 3.5-4ghz (whatever its capable of)
    PVP800-e deluxe
    2 hard drives
    1 cdrw drive
    1 DVD drive
    PCI Tv card
    PCI Philips sound card
    ATI 9700pro

So here are the first few i have come across and havent ruled out instantly

More than id like to pay but i hear it is very good:

    Tagan TG480-U01 480W ATX2.0 Silent PSU £63

These have high power ratings and low noise ratings but i know that arent as good as they claim to be but are quite cheap:

Hiper Silent Dual Fan 425W £33
    Hiper Type R 480W ATX2.2 PSU £50
Hiper Power Triple fan 525W £50

I havent heard much of this company but this seems highly rated for a good price, am i right in thinking that theres no need for concern over the relatively low power rating due to the high quality?

    Fortron/Source ATX-400W 120mm £44

I am open to any suggestions and comments. Thanks in advance.

Get the tagan, it is the best available to the average consumer

Thanks for the swift replies. I agree the tagan is probably my best bet and im tempted. However i know that my budget cant really stretch so id have to cut back elsewhere.

The Type R 480w seems pretty good for the price but quite a few other reviews and forums say its not the quietest. I have very sensitive ears so this is of some concern to me. If anyone owns one id be interested in their oppinions.

    Any more recommendations? Thaks again.

Antec true power is nearly silent. Mine runs at about 1300rpm and I can't hear it at all. Mines only 330w but provides stable 12v rails and the rest.

Stick with the Tagan because it will last you longer and is far better PSU to start with. Do not compromise on the power supply especially with a blood sucker like the prescott!

The Antec is about £50 for 380w if memory serves me correctly. Ill go and look for reviews and prices, thanks for the input.

The number of watts means nothing, look for the number of Amps on the 12V rail when comparing PSU's.

Yeh you are probably right about the tagan, i will porbably just have to admit to myself that i will have to wait till next month to buy the rest of my components and splash out a bit for quality. Im still curious about the Fortron though but despite strong reviews i dont think its used very commonly (maybe for good reason) so i wont get any comments on it.

Well this is why the fortron interested me, i know its 400w isnt as high as the others but its meant to keep a high current on the 12v rail even under heavy load. Also i read that it is quiet and it is fairly cheap. Ill see if i can dig up the reviews i read.

The tagan easily handles FX55s with 6800GTs in SLi so I think it can more than handle your components They have a good reputation for a reason.

Its like filling a Ferrari with regular unleaded instead of premium performance unleaded..just to save a few pennies

When pennies are all you have you learn to treasure them.

If i do go for a Tagan should i choose the 480w at about £63 or will the 380w at £40 be enough. I suppose i should go for the 480w as they are BTX compatible so ill be using it for a long time.

Yup, 18a on the 12v is good.
Fortons are good quality power supplies but are cheaper because they don't have the cosmetics of others.
Dell use fortons in their machines I believe.

I wont be using a windowed case so dont care about cosmetics (as long as ther are no leds....). Why is it i rarely hear about Fortrons? I always like to go for something a little bit different but only if its up to the job.
