Checklist Please!

I'm about to put together a gaming pc, and this is my first build. ever.
I'm ever so slightly scared of exploding expensive parts by forgetting something basic. :shocked2:

Some suggested "commandments" of pc building would be most helpful! :)
(In what order should I put the parts in, first boot, etc.)

My main concern is updating the BIOS (which i think NEEDS to be done with the asus - and I have NO idea how).

[If it helps, my spec will be:
A64 3200, A8N-SLI Deluxe, 74g Raptor, 1gig Corsair ram, X800 XT, Tagen 480W.]

have you already bought these parts? if not, then i would suggest changing the GPU to an nvidia 6800GT or Ultra, as you wont be able to use the ati in SLI. or you can change the motherboard to an nforce 4 ultra (no SLI)

it would be better if you posted a full list of parts, especially the case (does it have a removable mobo tray?) and cpu HSF (bolt-through or clip-on?).

for the BIOS thing, you may not need to flash it if you have a new board. the reason people had to change the bios originally was because the old boards weren't designed to support the new winchester cored amd cpus. newer boards should be ok. it would be better to search the board vendors site to see what category your board falls in. they should also have a new BIOS (should you need it) and instructions of how to install it.

the cpu hsf should come with TIM, but you may want to buy some better stuff like arctic silver 5. the arctic silver website will also have a guide (with pics) showing how to install the TIM and hsf

You don't have to use google. Have a look at the thread at the top of the page which was started by Vaul. That might give you a few pointers and you can decide where to go from there.

Take your time, ground yourself and don't go running across the carpet while holding your CPU or videocard to answer the phone.

DON'T turn on the system without a heatsink properly fitted to the CPU as per AMD's (or Intel's) instructions.
Check it. Check it again. Get a friend to check it. Then you can turn it on! :)
Plugging in the CPU fan is also a good idea. ;) But get that heatsink fitted properly!!!

I did read Vaul's sticky, but i've already bought the parts.
I went for the SLi mobo in an attempt to give me a bit more lifespan on the beast (if it becomes "the norm" later), but the ATI card was a winner on price/performance for me.

The case I have is a Chenbro Xpider II. No removable mobo tray unfortunately :(
Haven't checked Heatsink & fan, i assume clip-on. it's the stock AMD one so far (not sure if im getting a better one - warranty and all that)

I'll make sure i triple check the heatsink is on properly! :D
