    Has the drive ever worked?
What OS are you running at present?
If you run a backup program, such as Ntbackup, does it detect the drive & does it give you any errors?
Are there any errors in the event logs?

    backup

The drive has worked in the past-but mi not sure how long ago!
The drive is in a win 2000 server machine
Ntbackup allows me to choose a 4mm DDs , but when i come to select back up it says that the required media is missing.

I have looked in computer management and in the removable storage >physical locations it is displaying 4 drives all teh same "hp c5683A sequencial device"
    Any ideas?

Can any1 suggest Other (cheap if poss) backup devices ?

It could possibly be the SCSI cable, do you have a spare one & is it terminated correctly?
Have you tried a brand new tape?

As for alternatives, whats your budget as NAS could be an option if you can afford it?
