    temps

    Im running a Shuttle SS40 G

the noise on the PC was real bad (see another post in the SFF forum)

so i have 7 Volted a Fan for the ICE system

Im running a Duron 700 in it

the temps are (this is according to the PC when i enter the bios)

    PWM Temp = 40
    CPU Temp = 54
    System Temp = 35

i dont know what PWM stands for ????

But are these temps ok ???????

They seem to be a bit high to be honest, especially if they are idle, I don't know what it means but at a guess it maybe the power supply?

I suppose the saying, if it ain't broke don't fix it comes into play here...

Google says PWM is Pulse Width Modulation:

"A switch-mode control method used in amplifiers and drivers to control motor voltage and current to obtain higher efficiency than linear control. PWM refers to variable on/off times (or width) of the voltage pulses applied to the transistors."

    Probably something completely different then.

Also, the CPU temperature seems pretty high, even for a Shuttle.

SFF cases are very small. Do everything you can to get as much air flowing through it as possible. Also consider replacing the CPU with something newer like an XP or a Sempron. Both will offer more power with less current draw. An XP underclocked would be a good way to lower the heat.

I'm surprised a Duron is making that much heat tbh, it could easily be reduced if you make sure the airflow in the case is better.

just ut the other fan back in

I got to say though, most disappointed with my "trip into SFF PC'ing"

the noise is REAL LOUD (even after i have fitted a Silent X PSU)

I'm not a great fan of Shuttles for their heat dissipation problems, and I suggest that if you can't get the airflow to work in it, try getting a slightly larger case and a more efficient processor (like an Intel j/k).

    got rid of the error

i changed a IDE cable, as i thought the rounded 1 was blocking the air flow (as the end bends right near to the fan)

the older IDE cable wasnt UDMA

are well, its only taken me all evening and im still no-where near to a quiet PC

Well, glad you sorted out the error there mate, but I think your problem with temperatures will require some input of $$$.

i only went put the Duron in it as it was a spare CPU i had here, and as its only going to be a MP3/HTPC box, i didnt think it would be strained doing such little work

Im in the process of stripping the PC im on now down, that has a XP 2400 in it, BUT its also got all my apps on, so i am in no rush to move them over

Did i see a Online store that does ready cut Shuttle cases, with a top blow hole ????

Can I suggest that you sell your current motherboard for an intergrated solution. That way, you'd reduce heat emmision and also make yourself a few quid selling your old motherboard/gpu.

Also, if you had a proper sized case, you wouldn't need much if any fanning. But thats up to you.

i'm sure kustom pc's would cut you holes in anything you send them/buy from them !! they arent cheap tho, but they are nice

    a good idea

    BUT

Ive just taken everything out of a midi-case to go in the Shuttle, in the midi-case i only used a 7 Volt'ed Fan for the CPU cooler, it was allmost silent, a nice little machine, did everything i wanted, BUT the case still looks like a PC case, and the Shuttle's look great sat next to a TFT with cordless mouse/keyboard

Ive been reading up on other forums, and the SHuttle's seem ok in the high 50's so i guess i could put the 7 Volt fan in and see if i get any probs, as the only probs are likely to be PC hanging/crashing

credit to the guys who run Shuttle HTPC's and PVR's i take my hat off to you

cheers for the advice tonight all
