If I were you, I'd just give your advice, with good reasons, and leave it be. There's no point trying to persuade somebody else to do something if they don't want to do it. If they make a mistake, it is their mistake to make.

The reason I'd give is that, from all the reviews on the internet I've seen, the Athlon 64s are faster in games - if you have an Athlon 64 and Pentium 4 of the same performance in games, the Athlon 64 will cost less. If you really want to persuade somebody, I'd concentrate on the fact that Athlon 64s can save you money.

well actually, they are buying a pc, no minitor, just the tower. They have £800 to spead, whats the best, it has to be pre built.(eg dell, mesh etc)

    Post

AMD 64s are more effecient, use less power and create less heat. Therefore quieter and cost less electricity to run

    Exactly
I remember when i used to spend ages talking to people getting them to buy the right hardware. Now if somone, non technical minded says they are buying somthing, i just dont get involved. Its simply not worth the hassle

Another plus, if you were to spend the same amount on the A64 as you were on the P4, you'll get a faster A64 chip

Just let him buy the P4, he will know how crappy his P4 is when he gets it. Make him learn the hard way.

And, selling one less CPU won't make much of a difference for Intel.

nowt wrong with a P4 though. A64 is faster in lots of stuff, but a P4 still goes like a missile. Leave the fella be...he'll be happier with his own choice.

Plus, if he gets the AMD, regardless of whether the first problem that he gets is that he clicked "OK" on a "route my calls via a dodgy premium rate connection in Mongolia" box in a pr0n site, it'll be all the fault of that "weird processor you made me buy...I knew I should have got a proper pentimium...<whine>" etc, etc... Don't go there. Let him get the P4 or I guarantee you'll be cleaning his machine for free, for ever.

Dunno why everyone is going ape over the intel platform, heres a tip do what I did, forget prescott and look into the older Northwood chips, they perform a hell of a lot better than the prescotts in my experience a little digging about you will find 3.2 northwoods for as little as 60 quid. As for crap for games I dunno where that comes from, yes they aren't as fast as A64's in games but they aren't slow either.

My p4 3.2 with a 6800GT pushes 110fps with full details, 1600x1200 with full aa and as in half life 2 and cs-s. Let your mate get what he is happy with give it 6 months he will prolly be upgrading again for the new nvidia sli nforce chipset for intel
