Mum needs a LAP TOP

Well people, sadly it's reached that point where my Mum has such a bad spinal situation, that she can't sit for more than 3 or 4 minutes

She is an avid letter writer, and it has occured to my Dad that while laying on a couch, or in bed she could manage with a lappy

Now, lets get some stuff clear. It's not for games, it's not even likely to go online. (maybe remotely within the next 12 months when she visits my house, but even then, not likely)

It must be memory'ed up (so no 128mb XP jobs) and cos Dad's buying it, it must be new.

Processor is really truly irrelevent. The ONLY other thing that occurs to me is that my Dad, being a serious photographer, may use it to upload Digi camera picks to, while away from home. But that wuld probanby be short term until he got home.

Which means I'd need either a burner, or a USB port that wouldfit a USB drive to.

So..if you had £500 would it be possible? I mean, I know NOTHING about lappy's at all

Well considering it's for your mum, she will want something easy. Also there's no vents on the bottom of it, so you can set it down on a duvet or whatever without danger of it overheating.

Plus the immense battery life.

Caged, you seem to forget that most (not all, please don't flame me) mature people have difficulty learning something new. I don't know Zak's mother at all (honest) so I couldn't speak on her behalf, but my Dad is in his 60's bless him, and it took him long enough to work out PC's, let alone now moving over to a Mac.

It could be different though, but when Zak doesn't know anything about Mac's either, who are they gonna call on for tech support?

That is a good point, but Zak didn't say whether she was currently using a PC or not. Although if she is then I agree that it's probably easier to stick with a Windows system.

She's reasonably IT literate, ie XP is ok andshe did use the PC a lot for Word docs, but she just can't sit anymore.

Right....we're getting somewhere. Moby's suggestion and Flibbs are both good. I am a great believer in more ram less CPU, so looking gooood.

Would love an XP-M chip though...so much faster than old Celery's

Can you go to £585? If so, then the Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L1300 is a GREAT machine. Got one recently for a director's dad; great widescreen (1280x800) display, proper mobile Celery with 512MB RAM, a DVDRW drive, Wireless-G.
